  1. True. Of all the great HRs in that series, Simon's might be my favorite. That's when I started letting myself really believe. http://www.progressiveboink.com/jon/images/wrigley/11.JPG http://www.progressiveboink.com/jon/images/wrigley/12.JPG http://media.lawrence.com/img/photos/2003/10/11/SimonSports_t440.jpg
  2. What a fantastic night of baseball, capping a fantastic first week. An all-NLC NLCS is a good thing. Detroit, Milwaukee and St. Louis all making the second round is great. Eff the east coast. Go Tigers.
  3. Tyler CLUTCH! [expletive] YEAH How does TBS not have the dump button ready with him at the microphone? Everybody knew what was coming.
  4. Lost in all of this is the fact that Alou would be getting fitted for a statue long about now had he pulled off the catch and the Cubs won the pennant. He was an absolute beast in those playoffs, and I never understood why so many wanted to run him out of town. He was a huge factor in us getting to Game 6 in the first place. abuck, I freely admit that I care way, way too much about this team. It is what it is.
  5. This thread is enough for me. Not watching this, ever.
  6. As you might have guessed ... they claim to have never seen the film nor read the book. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/26/hawk-harrelson-steve-stone-rip-moneyball-book-and-movie-admit-theyve-seen-nor-read-neither/

  8. I was in school at the time. We left the apartment to celebrate a buddy's 21st birthday, and at that point I felt the game was in the bag. We got to the bar just in time to see the replays on ESPN. I almost threw up on the spot.
  9. So does their ballpark. It is appropriate.
  10. Marty Sandberg's vision for the "Triangle Building." http://trianglebuilding.blogspot.com/
  11. April 5, 7-8: WASHINGTON (3 games) April 9-12: MILWAUKEE (4) April 13-15: at St. Louis (3) April 17-19: at Miami (3) April 20-22: CINCINNATI (3) April 23-25: ST. LOUIS (3) April 27-30: at Philadelphia (4) Looks like we will be playing in harsh conditions throughout April. Would have been nice to tie an Atlanta/Houston visit with the Miami trip, or swap the Brewers series to Miller Park.

  13. The Cubs and Cardinals are nationally significant teams with reviled followings who showed up in Houston in big numbers when all three teams were good. There is no comparison in the AL West. The Dallas connection is a positive for them, I'll give you that.
  14. Houston really has no choice, but I'd hate to be charged with convincing that market to get excited about the Angels, Athletics and Mariners. Rivalries will develop, but it will be a long, hard slog.
  15. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-cubs-old-style-makers-reach-deal-to-keep-selling-beer-at-wrigley-20110907,0,190239.story Now we can move on.
  16. Hmm ... http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-cubs-farm-director-fleita-given-extension-20110903,0,6855491.story
  17. There have been a host of articles and blog posts concerning that one line from the new overseers of Old Style, but nowhere did I read that the Old Style taps would be pulled from the park - merely that the close-knit marketing partnership between the Cubs/Old Style/WGN-720 would be dissolved.
  18. Either way, he was clearly a caretaker charged with overseeing the Tribune's divestment of the Cubs, not a long-term choice. You are right, Colletti is the bigger [expletive], by far.
  19. Dusty Baker does not receive a tenth of the criticism he deserves. It is incredible that he is still in the game.
  20. The same way John McDonough became team president(!). These guys know how to sell themselves. But Team President the way McDonough was team president was a different situation. He wasn't involved in the on-field product. Really? My understanding is that he was a direct successor to MacPhail on the Tribune org chart, and was involved in the monster contracts of the '06/'07 offseason. He sounded very much like a factor on the baseball side when he was talking about putting the Cubs in the World Series on that dreary day at the end of the 2006 season.
  21. Lots of guys who weren't the Cubs' "best player" have been marketed ahead of Aramis over the years. Gritty they were.
  22. The same way John McDonough became team president(!). These guys know how to sell themselves.
  23. Hard to believe that Aramis could walk unnoticed into just about any 7-Eleven in the country. He plays for arguably the most visible team in the NL in a huge market. He filled a famous positional void for said most-visible team. He was a part of the most-visible team's best run in decades. Colossal marketing fail for the Cubs and (one of many) for MLB. This guy is a star.
  24. The Devry shuttle does not run on weekdays, as the lots are in use by the for-profit college.
