  1. The ones getting "screwed" are the fans trying to score tickets to big games at face value because they love this team. The guy who took off work to fight the VWR, or to stand in line at Wrigley, only to be greeted with the dynamic, demand-inflated price. The Cubs have every right to do this, and I am pleased that the ballclub will have more revenue to work with that previously lined the brokers' pockets. But I am not blind to the fact that there are fans being hurt.
  2. The price only went to $140 after inventory was pared down. Presale buyers and those who had first crack this morning were not presented with that price.
  3. Buy early, or ELSE. Attendance was going to take a hit anyway, so it appears the experiment is underway. Scalping is going to be a thing of the past if it isn't already, and I can't blame the Cubs for taking action. The shame is that the fans get screwed along with the brokers.

  5. Good for him. The PED witchhunt is a bunch of BS anyway.
  6. Really no reason to draw this out over several seasons when you could get it done in one.
  7. Many youth leagues in rural areas are run for the sole purpose of prepping the "good" kids for the travel season. Very few youth coaches are actually out there to teach the game to raw kids. Back on topic, the "Astros" nickname hasn't fit with their marketing since they left the dome. The current uniforms would make more sense with "Colt .45s" across the front.
  8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLArdyu2Tzo&feature=related 1972 - Pappas' perfect game-turned no-hitter. This same user has thrown up a ton of great stuff from the 1970s. Can't believe MLB has let it go this long.
  9. I wish they would standardize the fonts used within the ballpark. Use the same style as is on the original scoreboard, and render the characters in white on a green background. It's a wonk's argument, but they can configure these boards any way they wish. Consistency here would really tighten up the presentation.

  11. The lower deck is angled optimally as-is. I concede that the 400/500 seating farther down the lines leaves much to be desired, but that's exactly the kind of problem a thoughtful renovation can address. No one builds 60,000 seat ballparks anymore. No one wants to pay a premium to sit a mile away from the action with the kind of in-home viewing options available today.
  12. People often throw off on the grandstand as nothing special, but the close proximity of the upper deck is of prime importance to me. The support posts that people bitch about make this proximity possible, and I believe any rebuild that results in upper deck seating being in another ZIP code - like it is in just about every new ballpark with the notable exception of PNC Park - would effectively "ruin Wrigley." Intimate seating, no annoying audio/visual elements - that's Wrigley to me.
  13. For comparison, here's the section as it is now. http://mlblogssnaggingbaseballs.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/6_zack_bleacher_box-thumb-550x437-10771011.jpg?w=550&h=437
  14. The LED board itself will likely be the most expensive component. The rest is just concrete pours and decorative panels, similar to what the Reds did with a section of their club level. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a66YWasb0Bc/Sb7GouNEI_I/AAAAAAAADvc/naTWnw4LcmE/s400/ChampionsClub-02.jpg
  15. Sure. Every season the players change. The ownership and uniforms have been changed numerous times of the years. So since 1916 — Wrigley Field has been the one constant which has defined the Cubs organization. People don't travel across the country to go to U.S. Cellular Field. Surely you realize that the park has changed many times in ~100 years. This section alone has been turned upside down three times in the last ~30 years.
  16. It didn't look silly before 1985 - no baskets in either of the corners before the catwalks were replaced with seats. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8c/Wrigley_Rooftops_780819.JPG
  17. Nice compromise - I like it. That section was an obstructed, overpriced mess anyway. Keeping the basket in place seems a little silly though.

    Cubs DVDs

Heh. I have the set's post-1989 games deteriorating on VHS as we speak.
  19. Jocketty going all in. Firing Dusty would have been a lot easier than giving up the farm.
  20. I always thought he was a Phillies guy. MLBN has rendered ESPN obsolete. I no longer get upset about what ESPN does. I don't watch.
  21. Nice scoop for the Appleton paper. http://www.postcrescent.com/article/20111202/APC0206/111202088/Combined-Locks-resident-ex-Brewers-player-Bosio-Cubs-pitching-coach?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|p
  22. We had known about the additional wild card, but this was news to me: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/11/19/the-extra-wild-card-team-might-not-be-the-only-change-to-the-playoff-format/
  23. The Marlins players are wearing the alternate home version (sans cap) in today's AFL championship game. It looks much better in use than I expected.
  24. Lots of teams wore the white front panel back in the day. Last one was the Blue Jays in 1993. This is a huge improvement for Baltimore IMO. The "correct" oriole looked great when first introduced in 1989, but the logo looked worse with each successive revision as they tried to make it look more like an actual bird.
