    IMO this is not a bad thing. Cedno will be ok. What they have to do is work out a blockbuster for Abreu or some such difference maker in the outfield. It is not over yet. Furcal was not that much of an upgarde over Neifi or Ronny to warrant such a contract.

Now, you tell me all the reasons why you think he is NOT worth 10 and I will rebute with why I think he IS worth 10. If you want an arguement, you got it. You begin. He is not worth 10 for 5 b/c he plays shortstop and is not a difference maker He not worth 10 for 5 b/c that is roughly 10% of of the budget he is not woth 10 for 5 b/c he will be not be able to carry the team He is not worth 10 for 5 b/c the Cubs have a guy who will produce a large fraction of his numbers for a small fraction of the price He is simply not a difference make and he wiill be the second highest paid Cub on the team The Cubs will have to give raises to Aramis, Lee, Prior, and Z in the next couple of years. The Cubs sign him to a 10 for 5 contract and one or two of those guys are not going to be around. He is not worth that amount of money. Your turn. Edit: the point is moot. But go on ahead if you really want to. I am interested in your thoughts.

    Don't ban yourself. I think of this like Gammons breaking a story. He doesn't ban himself from ESPN when he gets it wrong. FWIW I beielve you believe it is true. There is a difference between that and posting false stuff.

    That would be me. Len told me earlier tonight that he's "100%" sure that Furcal is coming to the Cubs and it may not be announced until Monday. He is expected to sign mid-day Sunday. He also said Pierre is more than likely on the way. Did he give figures?

    That is a Sammy like contract. I will fully expect him to carry the team 2 out of the next 4 years.

    Okay, how has nobody pointed out that it's only as low as 78% because of one particularly bad year, and that it hasn't dipped below 82% in any year for the past three? b/c I capitualted a page or two back. Is he worth 13 mill year for the next 4?

    What will kill me is if Furcal signs with another team people will undoubtably say Hendry can't be blamed b/c he signed with another team. Although that is true he seemed to focus on this (depending on what else he does this off-season). I do think the Winter meetings will be a popin this year though.

    Ronny is murding the pitching in Venzeula this Winter. I'd say he is going to be able to fill SS if need be. Yeah, I'm glad he's hitting, but do you equate the Venezeula league with the majors? It is roughly the equavelent to AA and AAA. But more importantly it shows a consistent history of production. Certianly no guarentee that he will be good at the ML but at least a safe bet to be given a shot at an everyday position.

He can really bone up on the word power stuff. The quteable quotes he can give to Dusty as his are getting tired.

    For the Cubs to solve problems, he is worth a good amount, whatever that turns out to be. Your selective use of stats is entertaining, but not complete. Help me see the light then. How much is a good amount? Select some stats that shows he is worth 13m a year? Throw me a freaking bone

    For his career Frucal has a 78% SB/CS. If one wants to say the break even rate is 75% then his speed is slighlty valuable as it relates to stolen bases. If one wants to use 80% he has negative value, as it relates to stolen bases. So, perhaps his speed is marginally usefull. Will his stolen base rate be this good in 4 or 5 years at the end of his contract? The Cubs have Cedeno. People get upset that the Cubs never develop homegrown talent. Well they have one in Cedeno. What is Hendry doing? Efectively making Cedeno redundent. Before I hear the 2nd base stuff, you should know RONNY HAS NOT PLAYED ONE INNING AT 2ND BASE THIS WINTER. I ask again is Furcal worth 13 million dollars?

    I could be off b/c I'm trimming a tree and drinking a few beers but Furcal is at 189/53 in the SB category that is roughly the break even point. Therefore his speed is niether a + or a -. No? If the Cubs sign him for 13 mill/year they will be paying him almost as much as what they paid Sammy. Can he carry the team? Would the money be better off spent elsewhere where the Cubs actually have a need?
