  1. I tottaly agree.
  2. Because of his SLG? I've got to disagree. I'll tell you what, you take 05 Freel (.271/ .371..371) and I will take 07 Soriano (.299/.337/.560) as my lead off hitter. Which team will score more runs? Soriano's obviously... So would 30 points of OBP be worth 200 points of slugging? Of course not. Nice false choice.
  3. Because of his SLG? I've got to disagree. It's a misuse of his skills, and not ideal. But all in all, it's not that big of a deal. If they had some regular .380+ OBP guys around, wasting away in the 7/8 hole, I'd be upset. But given what they had, it didn't matter all that much. Personally I'd rather they keep Soriano there than have Hendry go out and find another leadoff hitter to take his place. What matters most is having the right 8 guys in the lineup, and that's where the Cubs struggle most. I agree with your statement given that the Cubs cannot find a better position player to bat higher in the order. I think Murton would be ok there, but he doesn't play. I suppose on the whole it doesn't make much difference one way or the other, but Soriano has to be one of the least productive hitters when he hits a homerun. And before anyone goes bat guano on me, I know that production (i.e., RBI) are related to others getting on base, but it's kind of hard to have that batting in the postion he does.
  4. Because of his SLG? I've got to disagree.
  5. I think research has begun on this. You're six months late to the party. What's a Desipio? Learn Latin. It's a perfect descriptor then?
  6. only a few inches of ground really freezes. they should be able to work. Depends on how "hard" the winter is. However, when I was in college and working for a landscaper he had us bury the water pipes 18 inches. I think the frost line is 12 inches, but I could be wrong.
  7. They were 16-22 and in 4th place when Torborg was fired. They were 75-49 the rest of the way under McKeon. And Mckeon stopped playing the crappy vets and let Miggy play every day and he brought up Willis. Neither the fans nor the owner deserved such a team, but that is life.
  8. That and throwing a hitter batting his weight first ptich fastballs when that is all he's been able to hit the entire season. Those were the real Cubs. They were/are a medicore team in a terrible division. Hack, hack, and hack some more. We've been talking about for as long as I've been posting on this board. It's like they didn't bother scouting at all. They were too patient with Webb and too hack happy with everyone else. Arizona lived on the outside corner. Then they throw fastballs to Chis F Young and make him look like Willy Mays when he's closer to Willy Tavaraz. I'm still bitter.
  9. I think he was injured or had a dead arm and the Cubs didn't want to publisize the problem. He was right around a career high in IP. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if he were traded, but I think that is becuase he has some value.
  10. Amen. Do you not read posts in this thread and just post random statments? I read them. Don't agree with all of them, is that OK with you? I agree with CUBZ99, can you deal with that? I can deal. It's just sort of amusing that the person's contention was completely destoyed in the post above yours and then you post "amen" as if you are in church or something without regard to how foolish it looks. To that I say, coffee cup.
  11. Amen. Do you not read posts in this thread and just post random statments?
  12. My word the home plate umpire is bad.
  13. Defense is important at every positon. I don't know where you come up with this stuff. The days of all glove, no get-on-base middle infielders are pretty much over. The questions are can the Cubs upgrade at SS? And if not, who is the better player going forward between Cedeno and Theriot? I suspect that baring a trade Theriot will start next year. I hope the Cubs/Lou will give Cedeno a chance, but I don't think the team is good enough as presently constructed to let either one struggle on a long term basis.
  14. What is an "extended look". I really cannot understand the mentality. Cedeno will likely not be an all-star, however he's much more likely to improve than Theroit. But really, that is beside the point. It is not very wise to expect all-star level production out of a first or second year player, most of the time. The problem with the Cubs is that they are constructed so poorly that they need a higher level of performance out of the rookies in order to compete. At least that is the only explanation I can come up with why some of the posts in this thread are so crazy. And Murton? give me a break.
  15. Murton, like Choi before him, was the golden child of this board. I have never quite figured out why either. Murton G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG *OPS+ 51 140 19 45 3 2 7 14 2 1 16 22 .321 .386 .521 135 144 455 70 135 22 3 13 62 5 2 45 62 .297 .365 .444 103 94 235 35 66 13 0 8 22 1 0 26 39 .281 .352 .438 100 Theriot G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG *OPS+ 53 134 34 44 11 3 3 16 13 2 17 18 .328 .412 .522 134 148 537 80 143 30 2 3 45 28 4 49 50 .266 .326 .346 72 You two do the Math. It is completely foolish to cast aspersions on the entire borad. But it is doubly so when the ignorance of the posts containing the statements are at such high levels.

  17. It is pretty bad, but you have some real delicate sensibilities.
  18. My word, that is funny
  19. Does Blanco just play for the money? Seriously, he must really love baseball. Or his hometown. It's really something. He plays every year. He takes almost no time off. I loved playing baseball, but if I make 2,000,000 a season in MLB, I'm not playing in the winter.
  20. Does Blanco just play for the money? Seriously, he must really love baseball.
  21. Throw the kitchen sink at him?
  22. How is he an upgrade over Murton in RF? Come on, you guys no better than this. In the last three years Church has had 268, 196, 470 ABs respectively. In the year he had 470 ABs he posted his worse numbers and he doesn't walk. Besides the salary savings I really don't see the benefit of Church. I just don't get the fascination.
  23. This is exactly what I worry about with a "local" owner. Especially a local owner who is acceptable to Selig and Rinsedorf. This could turn out real, real bad.
  24. I did look at his stats, and no he's not much better than Jones. http://www.fangraphs.com/comparison.aspx?playerid=735&playerid2=2106&playerid3=&position=OF&page=1&type=full I'm all for getting rid of Jones but Church offers not much more except for scrappy whiteness and anti-semitism. I don't care that he is cheaper (marginally), he isn't aprreciably better. The Cubs need to get appreciably better.
