  1. Wisdom looks like an early 80's pornstar with those glasses on.
  2. I'd like that more than what they are doing.
  3. I'm in love with his swing.
  4. The players just want their workday to be over. I think maybe the solution is just to have ties. Runner on 2nd is a mockery of the sport whose only purpose is to get a binary outcome as quickly as possible. If it's not important enough to play with the normal rules of baseball, it is not worth doing.
  5. Apparently, their politics is coming into play here as well, I'm not sure how much value to put in that part of the equation as money usually wins these types of contests. If they come up with the best offer/plan, they will probably be the next owners. In my opinion, that's a bad thing for society in general, but might not be a bad thing for the team they will own. Some proportion of every dollar they make goes to fund the worst people in the world of politics, at least in America.
  6. ZiPS says around 80: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/jonathan-villar-joins-the-cubs-as-their-newest-jack-of-all-trades/ What are they going to do in July if they are hovering around .500 and are 8 games behind the Brewers/Cards and 3 games out of the Wild Card? It's more a rhetorical question, but does anyone think they sell farm hands to maybe squeak into the Wild Card? Isn't it much more likely they sell?
  7. I can see this team winning ~75 games, but there is real potential for a 100 loss season. I suppose the fact that they get to play the Reds and Pirates a lot will help, but wow.
  8. I don't understand this thinking at all unless you think Amaya is going to be ready to step in next year or the year after. MLB catching is a black hole of suck and Contreras is already here. I think it's precisely because MLB catching is a "black hole of suck" that the Cubs would adopt this approach. Look at the fWAR leaderboards for catching last year. Contreras comes in 12th, surrounded by guys who aren't particularly well-regarded. And that's because most catchers either hit well or defend well, but only a sparse handful do well at both. Contreras can hit, but he's just not much of a defender at a position with a really high bar for it. And ultimately, that's the problem. I'm sure Jed looks at the catching marketplace and realizes that paying for a defensive specialist who can put up comparable total value to Contreras is going be a heck of a lot cheaper than a flashy, offense-first guy like Contreras. That’s a lot words for being so wrong.
  9. I mean we just signed a very high profile guy in Suzuki and by all accounts our pitch to him was great and we also got Stroman, who had plenty of suitors. I still trust they can get a guy they desire to target. But yeah, I’m kinda good with shopping/not extending Contreras unless the extension is on the teams terms. The injury risk/wear and tear with aging catchers aren’t low and Contreras hasn’t even stayed all that healthy as a younger guy. I’d love to keep him but get not extending him at this moment if it’s not on the right terms. I don't understand this thinking at all unless you think Amaya is going to be ready to step in next year or the year after. MLB catching is a black hole of suck and Contreras is already here.
  10. c'mon that was grandfathered in, their total spend in the 10-11 offseason was less than $28M I don't see how that matters. If it does then the argument is the Ricketts were intentionally wanting the team to lose by supplying it with a Top 5 payroll and not firing the GM who had averaged 84 wins/season prior to them(including 97 the year before they bought the team) and won 83 in their first year. It makes the definition of 'tanking' so broad as to be meaningless. I'm having difficulty giving them credit for not intentionally selling off players on a winning team they bought. But really, it's history. This isn't the same organization they bought; it's the organization they created and it's not in the same shape with the same rules as then. If winning is 2nd or 3rd on the list of importance to them, what they are doing makes perfect sense. They are charging premium prices and running out a mediocre product. It's up to the fans to support that. The Ricketts are banking on it. I think the new (old) CBA kind of threw a wrench in Theo's plans and then the Ricketts stopped spending to extend the window of contention.
  11. The mantra use to be: every season is precious. The mantra now: every dollar is precious.
  12. Vizcaino Taken off the 40 man and put on the restricted list.
  13. I wonder how ticket sales are going? I’ve gotten 5 emails this week reminding me to purchase tickets.
  14. So is this the team they start the season with?
  15. The Cubs a shittily owned and ran baseball team. But the fact he agreed to such a contract suggests collusion. Why would Correra care which agent group gets a cut? Why would he listen to Boras and settle for something like this? If the Baltimore rumor was true, one would think he signing there.
  16. I saw a Twitter report that Correra was unlikely to sign with the Astros. Come on Tommy and Jed, I know you're reading this. Get it done.
  17. With the Voit trade, it seems evident that something is going to have to shake loose from the Padres, no?
  18. He's got a quiet approach and a nice quick swing without much hitch in the load. A highly repeatable swing.
  19. If the Cubs could somehow manage to sign Correra, even with a 1 year opt out I will personally refrain from criticizing management for the entire 2022 season. Shouldn't that be enough to get this to the finish line?
  20. With the resources the Cubs have there isn’t a single reason why they shouldn’t be contending or trying to contend every year. Not one.
  21. I saw Donny Dewees was in RF. I feel like he’s been in the Cubs organization since like 2010.
  22. Weee! they are off to a raucous start.
  23. If this is the team, what is the point in trading for Hosmer?
  24. I think most don't have much of a hope anymore, but does this effectively confirm we're out on Correa? Or not really a factor either way? I agree with Goony. It shouldn't affect the pursuit of Correra one way or the other. But I question whether they were really ever in on him in the first place.
  25. Cubs lead the league in backup caliber infielders. Not a starter in the batch. Stocking up on fungible assets for the trade deadline. That seems to be their mode of operation now. Put half a team out to play for half a season and see what you can reel in come July 31.
