  1. He's washed.
  2. These guys are supposed to be really smart. Hoyer went to a highfalutin college in CT. You cannot say something is an "overpay" if that is what passes for a free market is paying. Kyle said this reminded him of the 1990s Cubs. But really it's the same story for most of the history of the Cubs in our lifetime.
  3. I’m a glutton for punishment. I didn’t watch many games. But I listened to almost every game on my phone but not the entire game for about 30%. I love baseball and can’t quit the Cubs, no matter what.
  4. That's exactly correct. The Ricketts have 24/7 assets around Wrigley that generate thousands of dollars per day every day. Even if Correrra is a total bust it would hardly cripple the team financially.
  5. Plan B -Count da money and continue to buy land around Wrigley to soak the out of towners. The Ricketts have a gold mine at Clark and Addison. It is very clear that winning baseball games is not a priority.
  6. They have a pretty good SS right now. They have a good system with lots of prospects just below the horizon. Now was the perfect time to sign someone like Correra. They signed Belligner who is a placeholder, flip candidate. They have essentially the same team as last year. They needed to sign a TOR pitcher and a star quality position player. I expect that they will be around .500 with a chance to sneak into the playoffs with an overpay or two at the trade deadline. They need a 2nd baseman, a 1st baseman, and most importantly a catcher. They probably also need a 3rd baseman too. I'm still hung up on why they let Contreras go.
  7. They could easily take that kind of hit if they needed to; other big market teams do it. People bitched and moaned about Heyward's contract for the past 6 years, so I guess....those people? And another long-term dud contract just gives Hoyer/Ricketts another excuse never to spend money again You can't have it both ways.
  8. Jed will come in third place for the most wins with the lowest payroll again this year. I wonder if Tommy Boy gives him a special trophy at the end of each year while he lays Huel-style on his mound of money.
  9. I don’t know, goony. The expectations were set by Crane. They’re going to have a lot of questions to answer if the don’t make a significant signing. It’s very out of character for them. I suppose it depends on if Jed doesn’t mind taking the heat from the media as long as he knows his job is safe because he didn’t spend unintelligently. “Spending intelligently” is going to follow him everywhere he goes.
  10. They won’t fire him the offseason. But I have to think he has to be on the hot seat unless he swings a trade for Tatis or something. If he doesn’t get either guy I may have to buy a cubs convention ticket just to see the atmosphere Jed HAS to be pissed at Crane for putting him in the hole by saying all that horsefeathers just before the winter meetings. But anything Crane says comes directly from Tommy Boy Ricketts. I don't imagine there is a lot of trust right now from the baseball opps people.
  11. Isn't the owner and his family in a fight over control of the team?
  12. We need a new Article up: Did Jayson Heyward break the Cubs?
  13. I don't see a meaningful difference between "worried the money will dry up" versus "worried the money will dry up unless the Cubs hit some undetermined benchmark of performance" A distinction without a difference. But it speaks to the Cubs culture even if it's partly true. If jed doesn't trust ownership to spend down the line and ownership doesn't trust Jed to spend "intelligently" why is he still employed by the Ricketts?
  14. I think they can sneak into the playoffs right now without adding another player with playoff expansion. The Cardinals appear to be the only team in the division actively trying to win in addition to the Cubs, more or less. It use to drive me crazy when Hendry and MacPhail would say they wanted to be competitive within the division, but the more things change the more they stay the same (See, Carlos Beltran, 2005)
  15. Given the PR spin by the Ricketts (Crane Kenny, PTR publicist/VP of Business), if Jed does not manage to upgrade the team and sits on the money that is supposed there is he, "on the hot seat" if the Cubs are again a 77 win team?
  16. This years Carlos Correa chase is similar to the Carlos Beltran chase in 2005. Only then the Cubs weren’t willing to go 7 years.
  17. It's missing a word or two, "Okay, I just got word the Cubs are close to a signing" is the main thrust. Hopefully he’s literally miss the word two, lol
  18. Could be all the talk from Crane et al. is foreshadowing the big announcement. Who knows? If they manage both Swanson and Correa I promise to hold my words about the Ricketts for a year, even about politics.
  19. Or making him the scapegoat.
  20. How does another team’s acquisition of a player make the position less of a priority? I think he is awkwardly saying there isn't another FA 1st baseman worth talking about on the market.
  21. Signing Correra is not a symbol gesture. For crying out loud.
  22. I can get close enough with the Correa stuff, up to this point pbly. Are we not exhausted of being marketed to? I do not want this kind of signing after pissing on the 2016 team otw out for aging as if they’re the only ones No clue what you are trying to say?
  23. They did, Bellinger
  24. I think the Cubs have to pull out all the stops and do what it takes to get Correra. He's everything they want and everything they need. It sends a message to the fans and other teams they are back in the game. Then they need to use some minor league capital and get one of the two catchers available, Jansen is my preference, but not strongly so.
  25. I'd wondered earlier if they would dangle Tatis for a potential Ohtani trade. How are they able to stay under the LT threshold?
