  1. Great post. It sounds like you know baseball, not just stats. Very refreshing. For the sake of all of us who believe not important element of baseball is statistically measurable, please keep it up.
  2. I never understood the fascination with Hairston when we got him other than many absolutely hated Perez. That isn't a reason to want to play him over Perez. They both sucked and they both still suck. It's like choosing mono over chicken pox. I'm glad they're both gone. We never should've acquired either one in the first place. Because people saw he had a few good years of OBP, yet never saw him play.
  3. The more I see him, the more I don't like him. Do you think Hendry is there scouting him?
  4. what's there not to like about Mateo? His numbers have been great for a couple years. Had he shown up to camp in shape, he would be with St. Louis now.
  5. Not to defend the Cubs or make comparisons, but if the Twins's lost Santana and Lariano, they wouldn't be anywhere near where they're at.
  6. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060710cubs,1,4935999.story?coll=chi-sportsnew-hed&ctrack=1&cset=true Kudos to Sullivan for asking some tough questions
  7. I refuse to acknowledge Mariotti, even if I actually agree with what he has to say. Personally, I wish more would do the same.
  8. With the new scoreboard would come commericals during half innings and at bats; which I believe would cheapen the experience.
  9. He probably miss 7 games. I hope they bring up Soto and give him a few starts.
  10. Today's articles by Sullivan and Miles provide a perfect example of who the superior writer is in terms of substance and style. Sullivan simply comments with hindsight, Miles actually examines the causes. Great article Bruce.
  11. silly question..do the minors use wood bats?
  12. Where did he come from? 25 IP, 25 K's, 1 BB, 21 Hits.
  13. I remember being depressed after game 1 of that Mets series. I think it put us 3.5 or 4.5 back. But we swept the DH on Saturday and won on Sunday. ..blowing off class to watch game 1 vs. the Padres was a great, (yet short) memory.
  14. Just wait until you see the look on his face when Walker is at first for 2 months.
  15. Happy Birthday, Bruce. Thanks for contributing here. Love your stuff.
  16. Are you saying the Cubs need more power? Please, I think you'll find that at the end of the year, they will have plenty of offense. It's pitching they need. Neither the Cubs or Reds displayed much of it in either game. It seems like all of your arguements are black and white.
  17. Most have had rough starts, Zambrano, Santana, Colon, Garcia. Peavy and Willis were sharp. Should be interesting to follow.
  18. Silly list.. Klesco deserves to be on this
  19. If Anderson struggles and Reds are out of it, I think they will trade one of their arms for Griffey.
  20. Neifi being hurt would not be a good thing despite him being the whipping boy for most of you. Like Macias, Neifi is not the problem, but I guess it's easy to pile on him.
  21. I would only trade Pie for a proven major league #2 or #1 starter.
  22. I would hope that if Cedeno is struggling and hurting the team, he would temporarily replace him! Where's the controversy? Ronny is still young and can continue to mature. The Cubs need to get out of the gate relatively fast. They can't afford to babysit. I really want Ronny to succeed, but I'd rather have them win.
  23. i really think this is going to be the year we run zambrano into the ground. there's no reason to refuse to give him extended rest in april. none. Agree, we should go with a 5 man rotation from the start, using Williams and Marshall.
  24. This guy is a tool. I'm surprised he has held on to that column for so this long. My guess is that he works for very cheap. From the article..."If only the Cubs could catch every break, avoid every injury, develop that same perfect blend of talent and teamwork, they could do exactly what the White Sox did. To end up in first place, not in last place, would be a heckuva way for the Cubs to make 2006 even more of a shock than 2005." Did he forget that the reason the White Sox won last year was because they caught every break and avoided injury? While I wouldn't blame anyone for not picking the Cubs first, this is article belongs in the National Enquirer.
  25. I think there are quite a few fans who enjoy ragging on who they perceive to be the worst player on the team--in the past it's been Macias, Bako, Harris, Coomer, etc. There seems to be some cathartic release gained by ragging on mediocre players.* ** *** *The above mentioned players were, indeed, mediocre. **I am not guiltless in this respect. ***Regardless, Pagan is a cheap, toolsy player who has had a very nice ST and deserves a shot to go north with the big club and show what he can do, even though there's almost no chance he'll put up numbers comparable to Carlos Beltran. Amen. I'm always surprised how much people focus on the 24th and 25th players rather than the underachieving pitching staff.
