  1. Let's not get too short on Garland here. He is a slight upgrade over Marquis and has been the better pitcher 3 of the past 4 years, last year being the exception. His 104 ERA+ is a decent bit better than Marquis' 96 ERA+. At 5 Million or whatever we saved on Marquis' contract Hendry would have gotten a slight upgrade in the rotation and added Luis Vizcaino, who obviously isn't good but relievers are fluky and you never know. I'll take that upgrade from Mr. Hendry. That being said, I totally agree that the plan was to get someone good to be the 5th starter like Ben Sheets or something. But even if we do, the last time we had a "full rotation" in 2004 that really didn't last long.
  2. Jim Hendry is picking up outfielders like it's his job (well, maybe it is), so do you think he'll take another flier on a down and out outfielder? We would only have to pay him the minimum.
  3. As far as Grace, he's going to need the assistance of the Veterans Committee at this point, since he received less than 5% of the votes. And as we all know, the Veterans Committee isn't worth Veterans Committee. Do you honestly think any of those three belong in the HOF? No, but Williams is the closest. You could definitely picture campaigns for any or all three of those aforementioned guys gaining steam in later years. But Grace has the essentially the same career OPS+ as Gil Hodges, who hasn't made it yet and was on the Bums in the glory days. Bernie Williams has several WS rings to sell and his integral role on the 98 Yankees team, so I agree that he's the best bet. Johnny Damon may have 2270 hits but he has a 103 OPS+ which isn't going to cut it with his noodle arm.
  4. Is there any significance to that day besides 11 combined runs in one extra inning? http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT199104210.shtml
  5. Lol. I believe it. I can see it happening actually. Why else trade DeRo for 3 scrub pitchers we have no use for? I think it was more than just a salary dump. Those three alone for Peavy? Really? Those three plus something. Otherwise you're inferring that Peavy is equal to DeRosa's value. I think those three pitchers fit the "young pitching" requirement set by Towers, but you'd still need Pie and Cedeno and/or Marshall at the very least.
  6. So then is Jim's plan to have one of our generic prospects randomly have an outstanding year and leverage that into some midseason trade in which we won't have to pick up salary then?
  7. And in those 200 AB w/ RISP, the difference between a .300 hitter and a .275 hitter is just 5 hits a year, or less than one every month. It would nominally make a difference for the team really 5 hits either way is not much more than pure chance.
  8. Unless Towers reconsiders. I'm not really sure what Towers was thinking publicly excluding them and further minimizing his leverage in this situation. Why be so open about it? I doubt Towers would trade his best player to a division rival unless there were absolutely no other options.
  9. I mean all he has to do for the option to vest is stay healthy. If he does it comes out to 4/51, more money for fewer years. The risk to the team is much lower though, so all in all it's a fair deal, more fair than Ryan's.
  10. Krod's deteriorating peripherals could be a problem for the Mets. He better hope he doesn't blow many saves next April and May or they might throw him under the bus.
  11. Sounds like nobodys more pumped tah Jake Sounds like Jake may have been drinking... He's getting acclimated to the Chicago lifestyle. He needs to understand that being a Farnsworth incarnate is not something to strive for.
  12. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/12/indians-close-t.html I won't mind rooting for Wood on the Indians.
  13. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081209/ap_on_re_us/blagojevich_corruption_probe How does this relate you ask?
  14. We lose almost all of our depth if we trade Derosa. Who backs up Aramis then with any decent level of production? Rich Aurillia?
  15. Seriously...Ryan Howard 2nd in the MVP vote this year? On what planet?
  16. Howry...surprised it took that long for someone to catch it.
  17. If Bonds and Clemens dont make it in, the Hall may as well not even exist, at least to anyone petaining to the late 80's-early 00's, except for Maddux. The Big Unit? Pedro? Griffey? I bet all three make it in.
  18. Slump Buster with your wife?
  19. I would vote for Henderson, McGwire, Raines, Bert Blyleven. I could be talked into any of Grace, Mattingly, and Dawson but my inclination would be to vote no
  20. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3737005 • Harold Baines • Jay Bell • Bert Blyleven • David Cone • Andre Dawson • Ron Gant • Mark Grace • Rickey Henderson • Tommy John • Don Mattingly • Mark McGwire • Jack Morris • Dale Murphy • Jesse Orosco • Dave Parker • Dan Plesac • Tim Raines • Jim Rice • Lee Smith • Alan Trammell • Greg Vaughn • Mo Vaughn • Matt Williams This is quite the list. Jessie Orosco and Rickey Henderson finally made it on the ballot. I can't decide who is he most ridiculous candidate, although I think that the frontrunners are Greg Vaughn and Dan Plesac. Andre Dawson, Dan Plesac, Lee Smith, and Mark Grace constitute the former Cubs on this ballot. Personally, I'm curious as to how Mark Grace, notorious for being the hits leader of the 90s, does on this ballot.
  21. double wrong, BJ Upton No Sizemore is right. Can you imagine how much Upton would get hammered when he chose to not run out his ground balls?
  22. I was at that game...his homer caused the loudest sound i have ever heard.
  23. Godspeed Kerry Wood. This is a sad day, but something tells me he'll be back before it's all over for him.
  24. Expect he was only one of those three in last years second half and that was old. He didn't even look old when he threw 7 shutout against us. But Randy Johnson could be 60 and require a cane and still shut us out.
