  1. kyle the sadsack will still be wearing sweatpants in the basement griping that the cubs didn't win it a year or two earlier.
  2. rationally i'd like that acquisition, but irrationally i think he's a fat d-bag with ridiculous tattoos, so i'd rather not trade for him.
  3. cincy is very unlikely to make the playoffs and has a borderline ace (cueto) who is a free agent after this season. What is it about Cueto that you find to be "borderline" ace? what is the question, the borderline or the ace? Probably the part in quotes. He hasn't had an era above 3.00 since 2010 well, he only struck out 6 batters per 9 innings in 2011 and his FIP was like a run and a half above his actual ERA. his FIP has fallen into the low 3s and clearly last year was his best one - highest K rate and still low BB rate - but he still had the second-highest LOB% and the lowest BABIP in baseball. maybe he's one of those guys who can outpitch his peripherals consistently, but right now i'd probably slot him in around the top 20-25 starters, which is still really good. just not quite in the upper echelon of #1 starters (which would be the likes of kershaw, king felix, strasburg, sale, bumgarner, harvey, greinke, probably a couple of others).

  5. Man [expletive] all that. Dude is gonna kill it. i'm not saying that he's probably going to be terrible, but i really do not see him being an impact player this season. that being said, if he can even be league average (a little below average offensively, but he should be a plus defender) than that's a [expletive] load better than the pitcher-esque offense we've gotten so far from 2B. and i don't think that russell coming up means that he is the 2b for any indefinite period of time; if baez or alcantara get their games back together they could replace him, or la stella could be decent at 2b and start against some RHP.

  7. just a friendly reminder that these are the projections for russell this year: steamer: 0.237/0.287/0.379/0.666 ZIPS: 0.243/0.302/0.404/0.706 CAIRO: 0.219/0.273/0.351/0.624 PECOTA: .239/.298/.389/.687 there's a good chance that he's not going to be very good this season. but he'll almost certainly be better than the hot garbage that cubs' 2b have been so far this season.
  8. i'm pretty sure you could look at their handling of russell (calling him up after a half season in the high minors) and find that it wildly contradicts some of the stuff that theo was saying about why they didn't call bryant up last year or early this year. some reporter should troll theo with that.
  9. idk why but if we're gonna do the pitcher 8th all year i kinda want montero 9th eventually we are very much splitting hairs here but i like the idea of giving montero all the pa in front of the pitcher where he's getting pitched around and letting addison raaaaaake that's not bad i just hate that i have to wait so long to see addyyyyyy don't do that.
  10. iowa's roster is going to be pretty dull now, although i guess it will be worth seeing if alcantara and baez (when he's back from bereavement leave) can get their offensive games back together, and if szczur's improvement in spring training was more than a mirage.
  11. put the best 23 players we can possibly find on the major league team, while also carrying a pitcher who doesn't pitch and a washed up catcher who gets to play once every 5 games.
  12. *replace "who cares" with addison russell.
  13. http://wrigleyville.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2015/04/20/a-look-at-the-cubs-early-season-plate-approach/ apparently bp is now hiring college kids to write articles for them? but this one seems pretty straightforward and sticks to the stats. notable is that the most damaging bats (bryant (small sample size warning), rizzo, soler, fowler) are being pitched very carefully. MLB pitchers presumably don't live under a rock, so they know that they need to approach bryant with extreme caution, despite him being new.
  14. let's just call up schwarber to play left field for one game, i mean [expletive] it, why not.
  15. who's getting sent down? gotta be alcantara, right?

  17. i don't feel like theo and jed are the types to let the meatballs play any role in player transactions. but it would be good for him to get the meatballs on his side rather than having them turn against him and possibly hurt his performance by pressing.
  18. finally jesse hodges' chance to appear on a top 30 prospect list.
  19. well we pretty much always get destroyed by liriano, but practically none of the players on the cubs have been around that long, so hopefully this will be a different story. castillo and denorfia have solid career numbers against liriano, so i think it would be a good day for both of them to get starts. maybe a lineup of: 8 fowler 9 soler 3 rizzo 5 bryant 7 denorfia 6 castro 2 castillo 1 wood 4 who cares, herrera i guess
  20. he had his highest walk rate and his lowest k rate of his career while at tennessee last year, and he's been bad to start this season. when stuff like that coincides with arm trouble, i can't help but fear that more bad things are coming.
  21. it seems impossible for bryant to keep BABIP'ing so high, but everyone says that he hits a lot of balls on the screws, and it kind of seems like that might be true rather than a scouting exaggeration.
  22. this is a family website.
  23. God our 2 through 6 or whatever is going to be such a headache for opposing pitchers for like the next 5-10 years. can't wait to watch all these guys terrorize the league.
