some players who were most frequently robbed of MVP awards: willie mays: led the national league in WAR 9 times, finished 2nd twice, 3rd once, 4th once; won the MVP only twice. in 1964 he posted an 11.1 bWAR and lost to ken boyer of the cardinals, who wasn't even in the top 10 in bWAR. in the 13 years from 1954 to 1966, he was in the top 4 in national league WAR every season - his worst season was either 1956, when he had a 7.6 bWAR (2nd in the NL) and a batting line of .296/.369/.557, or 1959, when he had a 7.8 bWAR (4th in the NL) and a batting line of .313/.381/.583. ted williams: led the AL in bWAR 8 times, finished 2nd once, 3rd 6 times; won the MVP only twice. finished runner up in MVP voting in seasons with a batting line of .356/.499/.648 and .406/.553/.735. had a batting line of .388/.526/.731 at age 38. babe ruth, led the AL in bWAR 10 times - but only won once because of a stupid rule that previous winners were ineligible. rogers hornsby, led the NL in bWAR 11 times - but the MVP (formerly the chalmers award) was dropped the year that hornsby came into MLB, and didn't come back to the NL until a decade into his career. he did lead the national league in 5 of 6 years (1924-1929) that the League Award was presented, but only won it twice.
