  1. kinda hard to say penn state "should have lost" when purdue needed 10 points in just over 2 minutes to even tie the game. would it have given purdue a better chance to send the game to overtime? yes, but even then purdue can still lose the game. so the blown call probably didn't affect the outcome of the game.
  2. if power refers to raw power, no way pujols should be ahead of dunn. i'd also put braun ahead of pujols. albert is a great hitter but there are several guys around the league who have more raw power than him.
  3. i'm really only doing merit-based rankings - none of this "who do you associate with that team" business. 1. honus wagner 2. paul waner 3. clemente by a hair 4. arky vaughan 5. stargell The viewers went: 1. Clemente 2. Wagner 3. Stargell Big Poison only got 0.3%!! yeah, waner and vaughan get overlooked a lot because the pirates generally were average as a team during their careers, they played in a small media market and they were overshadowed by some of the greats during that time (ruth, gehrig, foxx, hornsby, ott, ted williams). also, forbes field severely sapped their home run numbers - while they weren't as strong as ruth and gehrig, and possessed more doubles/triples power than home runs, i suspect that they'd have increased their home run totals by a factor of 2 if they'd played in a more homer-friendly park.
  4. can't believe dusty and ned yost couldn't crack the top 3 managers.
  5. wait i wasn't really paying attention, did the bronze medal in the women's (girls') vault go to a chinese girl that pretty much landed one of her vaults on her knees? i think i heard one of the people say that is a deduction of 0.8... shouldn't that be a lot more of a deduction, being as you didn't complete the most important part of the vault? in other news, the u.s. women's volleyball team just won an entertaining match against italy to make the semifinals and have a good chance at a medal. also, logan tom is hot and most certainly of legal age.
  6. i am going to predict that michigan state does what they always do, start out good, lose a game to a good team that they should've won, then go in the toilet. this would be an interesting debate ... which school should get the copyright on starting out great losing a game they should win and then tanking; Purdue or MSU. purdue starts out great because they play lousy teams out of conference and always seem to get one or two big ten cream puffs early on too. so they're like 5-0 or 5-1 and people think they're good, then they start playing teams that are more talented than them - usually michigan, ohio state, penn state, wisconsin - and start losing. for quite a while, purdue is pretty much what penn state has been the last couple of years - they win the games they're supposed to win, and they lose the ones they're supposed to lose.
  7. 1. feller 2. nap lajoie 3. speaker (better player than lajoie, but many of speaker's best years came in a red sox uniform) can't believe the fans forgot nap lajoie
  8. i'm really only doing merit-based rankings - none of this "who do you associate with that team" business. 1. honus wagner 2. paul waner 3. clemente by a hair 4. arky vaughan 5. stargell
  9. Walter Johnson was ESPN's top pick, and Puckett was left off the list but put on top by the fans. I don't remember the other two names, but they seemed like fairly obvious choices. probably killebrew (he should be 2) and carew (he should be 3)
  10. probably a good thing that daytona is off, because they sure weren't going to play today.
  11. i'd be happy since he hit two homers in a game against us, and we're playing the reds now, but i know that whoever is catching for them is going to hit our pitchers. but seriously, this is dumb. ross is actually pretty good if you're using him as a backup catcher, and a lot more worthwhile than paul bako. guess jocketty didn't want dusty to lose one of his toys. i'd expect ross to find another employer very quickly.
  12. i'm not even sure why they'd mention that. what a useless piece of information.
  13. gamel is great as long as he doesn't have to walk out into the field with a baseball glove. the pirates have done some good things with the draft. unfortunately there are no good players here in state college, so the local team is something like 11-45 now, but it seems the pirates are moving in the right direction.
  14. and it's official, ned yost is the white dusty baker.
  15. suppan:brewers :: marquis:cubs
  16. the florida marlins - their "ballpark", their "fans", their "announcers", their "owner". pretty much everything about them is a pox on baseball.
  17. hurry up and lose so we can get out of this hellhole
  18. they can train over here but I don't think we should be handing out scholarships to swim and run over here. do explain, mr. dobbs.
  19. only 1 LOB each of the last 2 innings... c'mon guys, pick it up.
  20. i am going to predict that michigan state does what they always do, start out good, lose a game to a good team that they should've won, then go in the toilet. I think that phase is over for them since they got rid of John L. Smith. that's what everyone said when they got rid of bobby williams.
  21. i was gonna say, maybe the marlins could leave a runner on base for a change.
  22. 6 balls in 23 pitches isn't bad for a guy who's getting squeezed.
