  1. every team's fans are frontrunners. people stopped going to watch the cubs when they were horrid in 2006, and more people were tuning in to see the white sox when they were good. i don't really have a problem with this either - if the cubs aren't going to put an acceptable product on the field, i wouldn't give them my money.
  2. that beach vb match was awesome last night... it was also cool to see how excited may and walsh were about winning the gold. one might think it'd be "ho-hum" for them since they never lose, but it obviously meant a lot to them. and then later on, great win by the women's indoor team in straight sets over cuba. they played really well - serve receive was great; it's been shaky at times during the olympics - and cuba played pretty damn bad too. i think they had one ace and 15 service errors. they've now knocked off the #2 (italy) and #3 (cuba) teams in the world to get to the gold medal match, and to win the gold they'll have to beat the #1 team, brasil. i didn't get to watch it, but u.s. women lost by a goal in water polo to the nederland. silver medal is better than was expected, though.

  4. lol @ dusty baker's reds :rotfl:
  5. theriot, of all people, is 3rd on the cubs in VORP.
  6. snuff stirnweiss??? i've never even heard of that guy, and i know a whole lot of baseball history. i guess that happens when all the good players are away in the war.
  7. that men's volleyball match was a great one, and played out just like the women's match yesterday - u.s. lost set 1, won set 2, lost set 3, then won sets 4 and 5. they're on to the medal round as well.
  8. Needs a battery of drug tests ASAP. There is no way anyone should be winning races by jogging while everyone else is busting a blood vessel running as hard as they can he's not jogging obviously. his stride is a lot longer than everyone else so it makes it look like he's not running hard, but he didn't break michael johnson's record by coasting. and i'm pretty sure that he's being tested, just like everyone else.
  9. that's only because nobody hits a power hitter in the leadoff spot. if babe ruth's teams had let him hit leadoff, i'm pretty sure that soriano would have no hope of ever shattering every leadoff record. and, it should be reiterated that a leadoff hitter is guaranteed to hit leadoff a grand total of once every game.
  10. according to BP, soriano has been worth roughly 6 wins this year. project that out to the end of the year and he's maybe worth 8. a below-average LF - let's say we were playing murton until he was traded and now are playing hoffpauir/ward/derosa in LF - i'd guess it's maybe worth 3-4 wins. so soriano is worth probably 5 wins over a lousy LF. the cubs are on pace to win 99 games this year. take soriano out and replace him with a mediocre player, they have 94 wins. the record with and without soriano is filled with white noise, which was well explained by umfan. it's absurd to think that the cubs would be a .500 team without soriano.
  11. it depends... does anyone play lf, or are the cubs just fielding a team with 8 players and nobody in lf?
  12. i'd say that they should let him play every day since they're not going anywhere, but markakis should play every day, adam jones needs to keep playing since he's young and promising, luke scott is raking and aubrey huff is playing too well as the DH to be benched. they probably should've gotten something for huff at the trade deadline, though.
  13. logan tom is def not hot...buttaface maybe, but that's the extent of it. She's certainly not your "classic beauty," that's for sure. she's pretty damn ugly to be frank. She's definitely behind Bown and Joines for me, but I wouldn't classify her as ugly. bown is too thick for me. http://www.virginmedia.com/images/logan-tom.jpg i do not find that to be ugly.
  14. well i'm not even sure why you listed him in the first place. he hasn't played much for the cards, and when he's played he's been very good.
  15. well i stand corrected.
  16. yeah, i would guess that if he were a u.s. player and were pitching all through high school, he probably would've started showing that ability a lot earlier, and probably would've been a high draft pick right out of high school.
  17. felipe lopez has a .901 OPS since joining the cards. In like 7 ABs. 32. you were close.
  18. He probably didn't come out of nowhere since he was drafted in the 38th round out of HS. His stuff and ability to pitch probably improved like a lot of pitchers do at that age as they grow. kinda true but kinda not. i don't think that most canadian high schools have baseball, so guys up there don't get to play a whole lot outside of summer leagues. according to an old BA handbook i have, he played mostly outfield in his summer league, but the mariners saw him pitch a couple of times and took a flier on him in the late rounds. he went to juco and played one year, then the a's drafted him in the 17th round. he went back to school his soph year and led all juco pitchers nationwide in strikeouts. the a's signed him as a draft and follow after his soph year, probably to a fairly good (better than normal 17th round certainly) bonus.
  19. kinda hard to say penn state "should have lost" when purdue needed 10 points in just over 2 minutes to even tie the game. would it have given purdue a better chance to send the game to overtime? yes, but even then purdue can still lose the game. so the blown call probably didn't affect the outcome of the game. not to mention that trying to get PSU fans to sympathize with blown ref calls is barking up the wrong tree well i think everyone, save for ohio state, has been boned over by the refs against michigan.
  20. felipe lopez has a .901 OPS since joining the cards.
  21. yeah actually they have been showing a lot of the things i like watching most (water polo, indoor volleyball) during the daytime hours. i was working 4A-11A today so i was able to watch most of the match live. i suspect that they'll get some prime time coverage now that they're into the medal rounds.
  22. i don't know if i'd pooh-pooh atkins' status as a prospect. he's been able to cut his walk rate down a little bit while maintaining a solid k-rate. it seems like he's been a little lucky on balls in play, but he's maintained solid numbers at AA/AAA and is only 22. he could be a pretty good back of the rotation guy, i think.
