Yeah. I'm trying not to overreact to literally one pitch. But Contreras started mashing last year and just hasn't stopped, through several stops. I want to see some data on his framing. And I want to see if Miggy can bounce back. If he's injured, that's probably the best hope right now. Maybe he just needs to get healthy. But, he's been hot garbage. At this point I don't care too much about how often guys play. We're so freaking good, it doesn't really matter. But, if things continue as they have, then Contreras could play a big part in our post-season plans. while the cubs don't have a huge number of veterans, ross would provide good leadership and tutelage, and i think some of the other guys in the clubhouse (like rizzo) are mature beyond their years and are good leaders. plus maddon is one of the best managers out there. i know the biggest concern with a young catcher is managing the pitching staff, but i think that the culture around the cubs right now is strong enough that he can grow into that role. plus they've got a better than 99% chance of winning the division, so now's a good time to figure out what they've got with a young player like contreras. i agree that maybe the best case scenario is that montero bounces back and starts playing like he did last year, when he was very good defensive and certainly passable offensively. this year he's been abysmal at throwing out baserunners, he's allowing wild pitches at an alarming rate, his hard contact rate is way down and he's hitting the ball on the ground more than he ever has before. it's not an understatement to say that he's been a liability. it's certainly possible that he'll improve, but it's also possible that this is the start of serious regression (he's about to turn 33) or that physical issues will keep him from playing at his best for the rest of the season. i really like bringing up contreras now because you can start to break him in while still giving montero a chance to improve his play (or possibly get healthy with a DL stint, if his back problems are the source of his bad performance this season).
