You know, I really can't wait until the "Good Old Boys", the old-time philosophy guys who refuse to acknowledge any stat more sophisticated than batting average or errors. Defense is important. I didn't used to think so, but I've been converted. defense is important but it's especially important when you have a pitcher who doesn't strike anyone out on the mound. if you're going to put colvin in cf and nady in right, tonight is pretty much the worst possible time to do it. i guess gabp is a bandbox, but that still doesn't mean you want lousy fielders out there behind a batting practice pitcher.
I think it's unfair to assume that he didn't work at his defensive game as much as needed compared to a lack of physical abilities needed to be a solid defensive player. agreed... he was with two NL organizations and the question was always "what do we do with him?" he's a bad defender now but the a's actually did use him some in the OF.... the reviews on his defense improved from "looks like he's trying to corral a wild chicken" to "bad", which is improvement. cust's problem is that teams figured out that his game is walks, home runs and that's it, so they challenged him more and his walk rate went down.
i'm watching the CSN Philly feed of the flyers-rangers game on versus, while the CSN Philly feed on CSN Philly is blacked out. great broadcast rules nhl.
baker is a career .260/.314/.409/.723 hitter against rhp and that definitely has some coors field help. the problem is that fontenot seems to suck against everyone... bottom line, the cubs don't have an adequate 2b against rhp unless fontenot decides to not be bad. i have no idea why colvin is hitting in the 2-hole; i think it was just yesterday that we were talking about jason heyward and how cox was batting him low in the order to keep the pressure off him. lou doesn't seem to understand this concept.
haha, ernie els was behind the green on 15 after already hitting in the water once, and he chipped over the green and it rolled down the hill but stopped in some thicker grass just before going in the water. his caddy gave him a ball and he went to drop it and the gallery all started yelling at him not to. it was pretty funny.
you don't take a guy who pitched an inning or two throughout the spring, was treated with kid gloves all last year and let him throw 100 pitches in his first start of the year.
cashner has more movement on his fastball (and better velocity out of the pen) plus his slider is way better than any breaking pitch that samardzija is throwing. the write-ups on him in the offseason made it sound like he's very likely to be a good reliever; starting potential is what is questionable.

all done for ca$h. 4.1 ip, 3 h, 3 r, 1 hr, 3 bb, 10 k. certainly not a boring outing. i really hope he can sustain his stuff deep into games. sounds like everyone agrees he's got a big league arm, it's just a question whether he'll be a good reliever or good starter.
looks like box scores are up now. dolis had a really good game: 5 ip, 2 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 5 k. b jackson is 0-2 with a walk and a K; lemahieu is 0-1 with 2 walks, burke is 0-3, vitters is 0-3 with 2 K's, lake is 0-2 with 2 K's.
nathan, you know anything about why the in-game box scores are gone on MiLB.com? this is a big letdown for those of us who like to follow the cubs' prospects.
Wow, that's horrible. Iowa and Tennessee have Gameday, so that's something. Mathes is getting rocked and Fuld has a single. dolis or whoever is pitching for daytona seems to be doing well; they have 3 IP without a hit.
