  1. yeah good luck with that. unlike the cardinals, the reds can actually beat the dregs of the NL (pirates, cubs, nationals)
  2. he doesn't give up many hits because he's been absurdly lucky. he has a .237 babip. besides a good pop-up rate, there's nothing in his peripherals that suggests he should have a super-low babip. his FIP is 4.34, which is a lot more indicative of how he's pitched this year than the ERA/WHIP he's currently sporting.
  3. i don't think it's nearly that simple.
  4. he already exercised his no-trade clause; he's not going anywhere.
  5. http://www.meh.ro/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/meh.ro4687.jpg
  6. they're not even working lee that hard. he's thrown 95, 105, 99, 118 and 110 pitches in those 5 games. he's just stopped walking people and his k-rate isn't that high, so he can go deep into games without a crazy pitch count. here's how many guys he's walked in his starts: none: 11x 1: 5x 2: twice he's the anti-zambrano.
  7. If memory serves, he's a converted position player. So the 26 thing doesn't bother me so much. But yeah, he sucks. not sure if he was a position player before being drafted, but he's been a full-time pitcher since being picked out of a community college in 2004. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/p/david-patton.shtml
  8. samardzija ended at 6 ip, 3 h, 1 er, 3 bb, 3 k, 47 strikes/35 balls. less terrible than usual, i guess. would assume that archer is done at 6 ip, 5 h, 2 r, 1 er, 5 bb, 5 k, 55 strikes/39 balls, 7 GO/4 FO. someone explain why david patton is still in the organization. he has a WHIP of 1.83 in high-A ball at age 26. he's terrible.
  9. according to fangraphs' player valuations - yeah i know, they're probably a bit inflated - and projecting out this year, lee has been worth almost $30m a year the last 3 years. so he's probably not that valuable, but if you look at his peers, he's been nearly as good as halladay the last 3 years, pretty much the same as sabathia. halladay was just given $20m/year in his mid 30s and sabathia was given $23m/year over 7 years. john lackey just got $16.5m/year from the red sox, a.j. burnett got the same, mark buehrle makes $13m/year, hell jeff suppan and randy wolf are making right around $10m/year. if you called cliff lee's agent and offered $40m over 4 years, you'd very quickly hear a dial tone on the other end of the line. if we're talking 4 year contracts, he should probably be aiming for about $80m.
  10. Again. Poops himself in public again. The media found it a bit humorous at first. Then everyone just got sad when he kept talking about it. i'm pretty sure that he's kind of a figurehead at this point... the coordinators must do all the work. an 83 year old man just cannot run a major college football team. so what is the obstacle preventing him for retiring? ego? not knowing what he'll do without a job? He was a great coach I guess, but no one wants to see him pass away on the job. He's beyond the point of retiring gracefully. he doesn't have much of an ego. he may not be a figurehead, as i said, but certainly most of the work at this point has to be delegated to other people. but here's the thing - the team is still doing well. they've been very good in conference and won some good bowl games. so i don't really see an urgency for him to go away, just because he's old. plus the football team has massively increased the public profile of the school, and he's contributed millions to the school. after seeing the way that bowden was given the boot at FSU, i'm glad that penn state is letting paterno go when he wants. with everything he's done for the school, he's earned that much, unless he's basically senile and can't conduct a press conference or a practice.
  11. does jared allen even have cell service in his cabin in idaho?
  12. you hate the yankees and red sox more than the cardinals?
  13. you'd end up with jim belushi singing 30 times a year. once a year is already one too many.
  14. yeah but you're looking at it as a 6 year deal for gonzalez versus a 3 year deal for dunn. if you're paying lee $10m a year his first 3 years - in which case you'd be giving him at least $20m a year for his last 3 years - and dunn $16m, that's $26m, which is definitely more than gonzalez will get. plus most players are not going to accept much less money in the short term and then huge money long term.
  15. yes, because the cubs have had some lousy managers in the past, they should definitely keep around a guy who used to be a pretty good manager and now is inept and disinterested.
  16. archer definitely has the inside track on minor league pitcher of the year, with 12 wins versus only 8 for mcnutt (yes i know wins are stupid, but people look at them) hitters are a lot more up in the air. canzler should be higher on the list; a .965 ops in the southern league is more impressive than what most of the iowa guys have done.
  17. he was part of the gagne trade/salary dump
  18. maybe so, but i don't think they'd do it.
  19. i'm not sure if that would be enough because when teams trade a great player, they usually want at least one guy whose star is rising - like mcnutt or archer or something. not a guy who didn't hit in AA, a pitcher who pretty much stagnated in AAA and a starting pitcher who pitched like a #4/#5 type in the big leagues. it's hard to sell that to the fans.

  21. So you changed his name to Starlin. If my wife were going to have another baby, it would be named Starlin. Anyone who has a son after about July 1, 2010 and doesn't him Starlin should be incarcerated for most of the rest of his life. unless they name it geovany starlin's middle name is DeJesus, which is (a) completely awesome and (b) another good first name for a child.
  22. he sure as hell is better than michael leighton and brian boucher. Shockingly, Philly's GM came out already and said they were not interested in Niemi. He better hope he can get a deal with San Jose or he's going to be in hockey hell. the philly inquirer said that to fit him under the cap, we'd have to send boucher and matt walker (d-man) to the minors. okay, so what's the problem???
  23. Yeah, but not by a ton. Marmol and Marshall both have an xFIP of 2.60 and 2.57, respectively. Ohman's xFIP is 4.37 and then Russell's is 4.64 and Cashner's is 4.97. in other words, our bullpen is terrible.
  24. he sure as hell is better than michael leighton and brian boucher.
  25. i thought ed werder just did cowboys crap (which, Lord knows espn enjoys talking about)
