And our setup/closer situation is probably elite while mateo might be "promising," his results as a major league pitcher have not been solid or better. nor has russell, whose decent 1.3 WHIP is damaged by the 11 home runs allowed in 52 innings. it would be more accurate to say that mateo has been lousy and russell has been solid against LH batters while throwing batting practice to RH batters.
for the same reason that you have officials on the field of play in every other game, to make a ruling on the routine plays (which constitute 99% of the calls probably) and rulings on close calls, with those rulings being maintained if video cannot change the call conclusively. do you really want a guy in a booth spending 15 minutes trying to figure out a bang-bang play at first? you let the umpire make the call, if look at it for a minute or two, if you can't overturn the call then move on. "sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't" just strikes me as lazy and irrational.
on the plus side, the cardinals suffered another painful loss today, taking the lead in the top of the 9th (scoreless duel between carpenter and billingsley for most of the game) then losing on an ethier double (off trever miller) and a home run (off now steroid-less ryan franklin)
In my pants. Now that is well done. Horrifying, but well done. Heh. I questioned myself on that one but just couldn't let it go. actually from your post, it sounds like you did let it go.
i think he can be a decent back of the bullpen option. ran into some bad luck today. the front of our bullpen is good - like better than average good - and the back of our bullpen still sucks.
it's amazing how quickly a guy can go from middle of the order terror to washed up. CASE CLOSED. happened to heaps of players in the past; might have happened to pena already.
Someone with more knowledge of the minors than me - is Brett Jackson actually major league ready? Depends on which facet of his game you're talking about. He's a good defender in CF and has enough speed to cause trouble on the base paths. In those respects, he's ready. As for his bat...hard to tell. He's handling AA about as well as can be expected, but I'd like to see how he looks against pitchers with more advanced offspeed stuff in AAA before seeing him in the majors. He probably could play in the majors now, but he'd have a lot of growing pains along the way. Just looking at his MiLB stats, has his walk rate been better than expected? He's got a .099 IsoD in the minors and I seem to remember (which could be wrong) when he was drafted that people weren't impressed with his walk rate in college. No, his walk rate was always good. His k rate was/is high.
