  1. they'd be wise to consider it, but they have utley and howard on their way back and, if they can add halladay in the next month, it's not too hard to envision them posting a really good second half record. they definitely have some valuable pieces, but they've got a team that could also go on a big run. almost certain that they hold off until the trade deadline to decide which way to go.
  2. next time just post "i don't know anything about the player you're talking about" Did you read what jersey and SCS said afterwards? i tend to miss all of jersey's posts. i guess it was a joke about cub fans thinking that campana is a lot better than he actually is? i don't know if that's true or not; i'm not really tuned in to the meatball sentiment.
  3. dave sappelt has struck out swinging twice tonight. brett jackson has only one davesappelt.
  4. i don't think we need to make it that black-and-white. when i looked at his team yesterday, it was illegal because he had four reserve players, except one was roy oswalt, who's in the minors. he only had 8 minor league players or something, so the problem could easily have been avoided if he'd just had oswalt in the minors. it's not like he was carrying 3 extra bench players or starting 4 relievers.

  6. rubi silva is a solid 10-for-27 in stolen bases in his cub career.
  7. those guys could always be PTBNL under the old system. jeremy bonderman was traded from oakland to detroit as a PTBNL in the carlos pena/jeff weaver/ted lilly three way deal.
  8. boy, just goes to show what can go wrong with starting pitching. braves were probably deeper in SP coming into this season than any team in baseball. hudson, hanson, minor, beachy, jurrjens was probably supposed to be the rotation, with delgado and teheran knocking on the door from AAA. but minor has been bad, jurrjens a disaster and had to be sent down, beachy is hurt, delgado has been in the rotation most of the year, and teheran has been inconsistent and recently tweaked his back.
  9. what is wrong with... -justin upton -ryan zimmerman -dan hudson -logan morrison -tim lincecum
  10. glad that cbs told me that nick swisher was hoping to avoid a trip to the DL when he missed like 2 games from a quad bruise. i'll be putting him back in my lineup tomorrow because apparently his injury wasn't serious at all.
  11. luis acosta, who signed for $1.1m last year, has struck out 30 times in 14 games for DSL cubs 1. yikes.
  12. agreed. i don't think his defense is widely regarded as phenomenal, so you're just not going to get proper value for him on the trade market.
  13. miggy cabrera's little league home run
  14. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/r-a-dickeys-three-movingest-knucklers-from-monday/ thanks for posting that link. definitely an interesting knuckleball. looking at the velocity of some knuckleball pitchers on fangraphs, here are the small handful who have pitched in the 2000s: jared fernandez: 66-70 steve sparks: 70-72 tim wakefield: 65-68 charlie haeger: small sample size, but high 60s r.a. dickey: 74-77 so dickey's knuckleball is quite a bit faster than most knuckleball pitchers - something that's evident by the naked eye as well as the data. interestingly, he threw his knuckleball in the mid to high 60s in texas - when he was making the transition to knuckleball pitcher. with the mariners in 2008 his average knuckler velocity was 73.0, then 74.9 with the twins in 2009, then 75.9, 76.1 and 76.8 with the mets from 2010-12. so he's been throwing it harder and seeing more success. i remember knuckleball pitchers saying that the key to throwing a good knuckleball was to NOT overthrow it - just let the ball slide out of your fingers. usually the ones they overthrew had some spin, so they didn't knuckle, and were pounded. dickey seems to have found a way to throw the knuckleball relatively hard, but without spin. pretty fascinating.
  15. isn't it kind of odd for marra to be a backup catcher? he signed for over $100k bonus and was a high school draftee from canada; seems like the kind of player who should get more playing time than a backup. also, is rosario going to be the starting catcher for the azl cubs?
  16. drop zimmerman add colby rasmus
  17. loving that K rate
  18. I've been watching the Sox feed. guessing the sound of crickets is strong.
  19. but he's been a knuckleball pitcher for many years, and wasn't good. now he's awesome. it's just weird how he figured out how to throw a great knuckleball in his mid 30s.
  20. i'm developing an interest in a 17 year old lefty for DSL Cubs 1 named jose paulino. had another solid outing today. his stats for the year: 14.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 1 BB, 21 K.
  21. and of course zych gives up 2 runs in an inning of work when we say nice things about him (though the runs came on 3 singles, and all of the outs in his inning came via the K)
  22. yeah i'd like to see him brought up to tennessee soon. the word on him when he was drafted was that he could move pretty quickly, and it seems like he's not having much trouble with the FSL.
  23. aj morris has been quite good in relief for daytona after struggling in april.
  24. i have just as much of a problem with the hitters who don't have much power and suddenly start hitting 25 home runs in the thin air bandboxes in the cal league. definitely rather have the high-a affiliate in the FSL than in california.
  25. Some explain to me how journeyman RA Dickey is now an all star level pitcher.
