  2. He also mentioned how he always thought it would be great to build a championship team from completely homegrown talent in Boston, and I think he saw the opportunity to do that in Chicago with a team that desperately needed a rebuilding process. The CBA made things more difficult for him. And the financial situation is probably a stick in the bicycle spokes of their budgetary desires, but honestly I think he loves the challenge. theo is a bright guy; i'm sure he knows that no team wins purely on homegrown talent. even if most of the core is homegrown, there are bound to be some good players and complementary players who are brought in as free agents. i'm not going to bother wringing my hands about a $75m payroll until it actually happens. if it does, hopefully the chicago media will turn on ricketts and rake him over the coals.
  3. and if the payroll drops that low, then i'll really start to worry about what happens with epstein and hoyer. i'd like to see them here long term, but i assume they didn't come to the cubs to see payroll slashed in half and start operating as a small market team. if they're looking at payrolls in the area of $75-90m for the next 2-3 years, i suspect that epstein and hoyer start looking to make a move out of town as soon as possible.
  4. i suppose i'm in the same boat as TT (above). if they're spending like $100-105m and continuing to pour money into the draft, international free agency, upgrading wrigley and other facilities, etc, i'm okay with that. obviously i'd want them to spend more, but i understand. if the big league payroll is something like $75-80, as some people have suggested, then that puts the cubs down in the bottom 10 payrolls in baseball, with teams like pittsburgh and oakland and minnesota. if that happens, then absolutely i'll bashing the hell out of ricketts.
  5. i have a hard time getting upset with ricketts, though. hell, if i had a chance to buy a baseball team, i'd do whatever i could to make it happen. if the financing is a mess and ownership is going to have a hard time spending money due to massive debt, then the other owners/commissioner's office shouldn't have approved the sale in the first place. This is silly. Would you have a hard time being upset with Jeff Loria? no, because he is a despicable human being as well as a terrible owner. i don't need to tell you all of the pathetic things that loria has done with the expos and marlins in the past 15 years. but it is true that the other owners and the commissioner's office bears responsibility for bringing the presence of such a shitty person into the game.
  6. i was definitely doing that. i'll go ahead now and predict a really good season for beef welington next year. age 27 and catchers often develop late. prove me right, big guy.

  8. no wonder vancouver does so well in the NWL; opposing teams are missing half their players when they travel there.
  9. Does anyone outside of Philly associate Chamberlain with Philly? they probably should, considering that was born in philly, played high school ball there, and then played professionally in philly for half of his NBA/ABA career, including during his prime.
  10. for philly, if i'm choosing four sports figures without being required to include one from each of the major sports: wilt chamberlain julius erving bobby clarke mike schmidt if i'm required to include a football player, then probably reggie white in for dr j. don't think the eagles have really had a standout player - probably their two best players of all time were white and chuck bednarik. and i suppose that steve carlton would be almost as good as mike schmidt.
  11. Pedro over The Rocket, or even Boggs, seems a little crazy to me Plus Ted Williams is already there, and not having a Bruin is wrong. I'd pick Phil Esposito. Bobby Orr? unquestionably bobby orr, if you included a hockey player. but it would be hard to leave out bill russell or red auerbach (if you're including sports figures, not just athletes).
  12. It is on ESPN2, despite what your guide says Thank you. My guide said softball on ESPN2 and Texas-BYU on the BYU Network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granite_Flats "hey, i just got cast on a new tv show!" "great, congrats! where can i watch it?" "do you get BYUtv?"
  13. is that really true?!? the cubs gave the rays a choice of castillo or chirinos and the rays chose chirinos? i thought chirinos would make a decent mlb backup, but jeez, i'd take the younger player with more upside in a deal like that.
  14. pretty much the only thing i enjoy about college football is the stream of twitter/facebook/etc butt hurt on saturdays from alumni and supporters of various teams. the notre dame-michigan game always makes for some laughs, and today was certainly no exception.
  15. since daytona lead the series 2-0 and are not in a must-win situation, i assume they will hold cj edwards and pierce johnson for games 4/5, assuming that they are okay with pitching each on 4 days rest.
  16. daytona's pitching has been nails in the postseason. (knock on wood) frank del valle gets out of a bases loaded jam in the 9th and the d-cubs win 2-0. need to win one game in port charlotte, where games 3-5 are scheduled. edit - daytona's team ERA after four postseason games: 0.00
  17. I'd be pretty upset to see Rizzo become like Grace the person He hit on my 15-year-old sister when we asked for an autograph in a restaurant during ST about 20 years ago while my dad sat a few feet away. Fun times. in his defense, he thought she was 16.
  18. i tend to agree, in that there are a lot of candidates for the back of the rotation, although it wouldn't surprise me to see them sign someone for depth. tanaka is a really obvious target; hopefully the financial issues and the need to pay a sizeable posting fee up front doesn't stop them from making a big run at him.
  19. blog about that almond-encrusted bruschetta you just ate.
  20. so if you were playing against peyton manning in fantasy this week, you've pretty much lost already.
  21. daytona win 5-0, their 18th shutout of the season. tennessee down 3-1 in the 7th.
  22. pierce johnson so far: 4 ip, 5 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 4 k. helped out by giansanti throwing out a runner at home to end the 4th.
