  1. either way, i don't think you're going to score. much like the cubs the rest of this game
  2. we probably shouldn't laugh, being as we're about to watch our closer blow another one
  3. ah good, now here comes the go-ahead double
  4. at least this ump doesn't know what a strike is against their guys too
  5. it was an auto-loss the minute the cubs loaded the bases with no outs.
  6. ahahaha you still think the cubs are going to win?
  7. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/images/ency/fullsize/17107.jpg
  8. Jock and Soriano are easily worse baserunners than Murton. DeRosa's no genius out there either.
  9. lineup looks fine, give Pie a day off against a lefty, and play izturis against the lefty too. though fontenot can probably still hit lefties better than izturis.
  10. Uh, I'm pretty sure that the "saber geeks" would laugh at the concept of Adam Dunn being a rally killer.
  11. BABIP: '04: .327 '05: .327 '06 (w/D-Rays): .335 '06 (w/Dodgers): .274 '07: .233 Maybe he's just been really unlucky with the Dodgers and the Red Sox, but boy has he been bad over the last calendar year or so.
  12. I'm not saying he was an all-star last year, but his VORP was not far from guys like Magglio Ordonez and Moises Alou. For the price, he performed well. This year he's earned everything that's come to him, including the booing and the decreased playing time.
  13. Yes, and a little bit of Floyd. Cliff went public with expectations of playing more, although I don't think he's being a real complainer. Jacque has whined since day 1 about how he's been treated, regardless of the fact that he hasn't produced, 27 HR last year or not. last year he produced fine.... this year he's been a complete joke.
  14. pre-injury stroke? He always sucked as a hitter. He only had a good first part of 2004 because he had a very lucky BABIP. Aside from that he's been an anemic hitter his whole career.
  15. except, of course, the Cubs are playing a team that is better than they are well, hill is better than washburn, and judging by expected W-L, the cubs and mariners are about even. I really don't think the Mariners are a good team.
  16. I'm talking about a guy with the potential to be a .900 OPS masher. Colvin certainly doesn't look the part, and his patience at the plate thus far doesn't suggest that he'll be a high OBP guy either.
  17. No way DeRosa belongs on the bench behind Theriot/Fontenot. IMO, the ideal lineup offensive lineup has DeRosa at second, Fontenot at short and either a Murton/Floyd platoon or just Murton in right.
  18. I think both of those guys have a good chance to become excellent utilitymen/slightly above average starters. Objectively, that's not saying much, but with this system, that's a huge success. I really don't think Theriot projects as a slightly above-average starter at any position... his performance this year is a lot more like what you'd expect than the fluky power he showed last year. He's a guy who can maybe put up a 700 OPS with a solid .340 OBP. Pie certainly has the potential to be an above-average CF, though. This org needs more impact bats in the minors, especially at the corner OF positions. A great-hitting RF would be ideal, but there aren't any of those in the pipeline. They really need to get the ownership issue resolved so that they can spend like a big-market team in the draft and internationally as well. The Cubs' development Latin American position players has been abysmal. I'm guessing this is because many young Latin players are free swingers, and they're not getting the proper instruction to correct holes in their swing and their approach. Unless it's a very physically gifted player like Pie, the players don't make the right adjustments, and aren't able to climb the ladder.
  19. The question is, how much of Harris' performance this year is a fluke? His BABIP is .363, obviously unsustainable unless he keeps hitting line drives at a 28% rate. PECOTA certainly didn't forecast a season this good out of him. Fontenot's PECOTA has him averaging around a .345 OBP with a .750 OPS over the next five years. If you're going to go with a guy who's got pretty solid offense but a glove that works better at 3B/2B, why not just stick Fontenot there? He can probably do about the same as Harris, and you won't have to give up anything of value. I'm still not convince Fonty can handle SS. Although, he does seem to have the range and the arm from what I've seen from him at 2B. Depends what you mean by "handle." If you stick him there, he'll almost certainly be one of the five worst fielding SS in the majors. With a fly ball pitcher like Hill or Lilly on the mound, I'd have no problem putting him out there... maybe with Marquis, Zambrano and Miller, you work Theriot/Izturis in there, especially when the opposing pitcher is a lefty. It's a matter of trading for offense... with Fontenot you probably gain about 100 points of OPS (30 OBP, 70 SLG) but lose defense from Izturis. Is that worth it? I think so.
