Yes, this. I don't understand everyone saying "thankfully - finally he can go to AAA and get ABs." What? The guy earned the right to start over hacks like Floyd and Jones last year. He's 25 and just hitting his peak. He shouldn't have to go to AAA to get ABs. He should have been in LF from day 1, put him in the 2-hole, and go to work. right but the cubs have proven that they won't do that, so the next best thing is for him to go down to iowa and actually play. In a perfect world, the Cubs would have competent management and this wouldn't be an issue, but given that Hendry/Piniella are morons, Murton to Iowa is the best-case scenario.

I'm wondering if he signs in time... plus I just guessed they'd send him to the AZL since it's a little closer to home and he's a high school player. I'd guess that if Marquez Smith signs fairly quickly, he'll be Boise's third baseman this year. -
I really think there's gotta be something going on with Barrett... just seems like he's either got physical issues, or he's not fitting in well at all with this team.

I'm looking forward to this season from the Hawks, which starts in around a week. Some interesting players that were signed last year, and hopefully some 2007 draft picks joining them as well. Among the players I'm most interested in: SP Chris Huseby (was he worth the late-first round money?) SP Mark Pawelek (approaching washout status unless he really turns it around) OF Drew Rundle (has he shortened his swing? intriguing athlete) OF Sammy Baez (overaged for this level; needs to get moving) OF Cliff Andersen (supposed to be a great defender; hopefully has a solid bat too - believe he was most expensive 9th round sign last year) SP Larry Suarez (pitching here or in Arizona?) C Josh Donaldson (assume he won't be a tough sign) 2B Tony Thomas (sorta like the pick... interesting to see if he can follow up on great junior season) RP Casey Lambert (low ceiling, but probably will move up quickly) Any others?

yeah neither one has been playing very well. Looking at the rosters, I'm not enthusiastic about their second-half chances either. Daytona might get a few players promoted from Peoria, but those guys aren't really an upgrade, and it wouldn't be a surprise for a couple of Daytona's better performers (Colvin, maybe Matulia/Chirinos, Atkinns) to get some time at Tennessee this year. That'd be fine with me... Tennessee and Iowa definitely have the best chances of winning their leagues this year. I think Boise should have a strong club too. -

standings updated... Iowa is holding their own despite a lot of promotions to the big club. The Smokies need to get going; they've been slumping and the first half close is less than a month away, IIRC. -
The problem here is that it brings a much larger chance of Floyd's option vesting. Do you really want an overpriced, declining Cliff Floyd on this team in '08? I sure as hell don't. Floyd would have to average 3.17 AB's a game the rest of the year for even his first option to vest. I'm sure they won't play him against all the left-handers (when Aramis comes back, DeRosa will probably play some RF against LHP) and then when Murton comes back later in the year, there isn't that big of a chance that Floyd could have that many AB's to have the option kick in. I'm too tired to remember-is his vesting option PA's or AB's? 425 PAs, meaning he needs just over three per game. If he's playing just about every day against RHP and pinch hitting in other games, he might get there. I have to root for him to get hurt or for Jones to play some, since I already think this season is in the toilet.

Soriano should have been put in RF and Murton in LF. Soriano has the skill set for RF much more than Murton or Floyd does.

Right, but what he'd been in the last two years was a position where he played most of the games but took about 15% of the games off, probably against tougher RHP. This year he's played very infrequently, and for a young guy who's always played on a pretty regular basis, that can be very tough to get used to. He can take BP until his arms fall off, but it's not the same as facing real MLB pitching.

Ugh... This is a team with a $100m payroll. How does this happen? It's Hendry's fault. He signed a formerly-productive player in Floyd, which inevitably was going to take away ABs from Murton. He didn't build the team with a true CF coming into this year, and ended up with about 5 leftfielders. With the Ward signing, Floyd was completely unnecessary.

I don't see how anybody could possibly think it's not about the lack of consistent time. No kidding. Good track record in the minors. Good player in basically a full year in MLB. Suddenly can't find it when he's put in a platoon of sorts (a very random one, at that). Seems to me, if you're looking for a culprit, you have to at least start w/ the lack of consistent playing time, don't you? He was playing well in a platoon in July/August of last year. He played well in a platoon in July of 05. That's 3 of the best 5 months of his career in the major leagues. Murton showed consistently before this year that he could play well when he wasn't getting every at-bat. I don't see why that would suddenly change this year. it certainly wasn't a strict platoon last year... Murton had over 500 PAs and played in 144 games. He had a .351 OBP and a .787 OPS against RHP coming into this year. His OPS was over .900 the second half of last year. There's absolutely no reason that a young, cheap outfielder with numbers like that should be essentially demoted into a platoon position.
