  1. If Hendry deals Corey Patterson (I'm guessing 80% probable with the Pierre trade complete), I think he would lean towards sending him to an AL club. If I were to guess 5 logical destinations, I would say the Yankees, Orioles, White Sox, Angels or Mariners might be interested to take a flier on him. Yankees - If Damon goes to Boston, and with Pierre and Wilkerson already dealt, and no movement on Torii Hunter, what is their plan C? Surely not Bernie again, although they offered him arbitration. Orioles - I've read reports that they may non-tender Luis Matos. White Sox - With Rowand gone, they are publically leaning towards Brian Anderson; local beat reporters have speculated that privately Kenny Willliams may not be so sure. Angels - Steve Finley was just awful in 2005, and the Angels would love to dump him on somebody. Mariners - Not a good year for Jeremy Reed either; there were some reports early in the offseason that they would look into Pierre. What's everybody thinking?
  2. It leaves the Astros with an extra 15 million to spend. I imagine they'll look for a bat and a second tier starter. They do have the dough now to take on Abreu's contract.
  3. Depending on what they decide to do in RF, there might be money to sign Clemens. I'd assume he would want no less than $15M.
  4. True in general, but is there any chance that Washington makes Livan available?
  5. I think that's a very good idea. I think he made $3.5M last year - would you be willing to come up another million from your figure?
  6. I'll tell you what I really like about Mr. Miles. He seems to get the stories first. Why is that? His accessability here is probably an indication that he has a down-to-earth personality similar to the way Jim Hendry is portrayed to be. The Tribune, Sun Times and Daily Southtown spent a lot of words in TODAY'S columns talking about the Tampa Bay three-headed monster of Lugo, Huff, and Gathright. Mr. Miles covered all that YESTERDAY. I wish we could get him to do a live-chat this week! Hoops
  7. Aren't they trying to deal Troy Glaus, so that they can move Tracy to 3B? You never know what a team is thinking, but I got to believe getting rid of Glaus, Luis Gonzalez or Shawn Green (limited NTC) is higher priority than dealing Tracy.
  8. If Hendry wants Abreu badly, but does not want to give up Zambrano or Prior, then he only has one or two shots: trade for Barry Zito or Livan Hernandez, and dangle them in front of Philly. I'm not sure what it would take to get Livan, but to get Zito, we are probably looking at Murton, Hill and Todd Walker.
  9. Did you think the White Sox would win the World Series 12 months ago? Did you think they'd even be in the World Series 6 months ago? You just can't predict anything in this game anymore. We're 2 players and good health away from making a run.
  10. Is it possible they could be interested in Kearns for the sole purpose of packaging him with Rich Hill to get Abreu? As I have been hearing the Lugo and Huff rumors, I've been wondering if Hendry will keep Lugo, and then flip Huff over to Philly along with pitchers for Abreu.
  11. Although, he does tend to have better OBP against lefties (50 points higher on average), and better SLG against righties (75 points higher on average).
  12. Based on what CP20 replied on another thread, it might be more like Cedeno at SS and Lugo at 2B.
  13. If you can upgrade RF over a potential Jacque Jones signing, then it might be worth it to slightly downgrade 2B. I still think Soriano is a strong possibility. Loretta is a guy I know the Cubs would have interest in, who seems to be available for relatively cheap. I'd do Walker for Cliff Floyd. Trade for Loretta or Soriano and go get Wilkerson or Bradley I don't have access to ESPN TV during work - is it true that Lugo has been discussed as a 2B acquisition?
  14. I assume Mr. Miles is in Dallas considering his article in this morning's Herald was from Dallas.
  15. 8:40 AM CST Sportscenter update: Bruce said Hendry has 4 goals for the offseason now that the bullpen has been addressed: SS CF RF Starting Pitcher Bruce thinks Hendry will spend the early part of the week focused on Pierre and Lugo. He will spend the later part of the week focused on RF and assessing the starting pitching market (i.e. is he better off trading for one or signing one). Hoops
  16. Just a thought: if the Cubs want to acquire Wilkerson, then Hendry needs to probably insert himself into a 3-way deal with Washington and Arizona, such that Vazquez is moved to Washington, and perhaps Corey and a pitching prospect is moved to Arizona. In addition, Arizona may require a team to take a bad contract off their hands as the price for dealing Vazquez. If it wasn't for his limited no trade clause, Shawn Green would be a nice addition in RF with Wilkerson in CF. Would you take a chance on Luis Gonzalez in LF and Murton in RF?
  17. Reading the Washington Post article on Jim Bowden's choices for the Winter Meetings reminded me that Scott Boras is Wilkerson's agent. That could be considered good news because Hendry and Boras seem to work well together.
  18. Maybe Hendry is driving up the price to get St. Louis to spend more, which would then prevent the Cards from getting Hendry's prized possession: Jacque Jones. Gah. You copied what I wrote, then added something very horrible about Jacque Jones. Just saw that on page 2.

  20. I agree with what you said in (1), but I am looking at it from the standpoint of Walker + average RF < average 2B + above average RF. I'll disagree with you on #2. I still think Walker is the best trade chip (save the untouchables like Barrett, Zambrano, Prior, Lee and Ramirez) on the 25-man roster.
  21. I'm beginning to think Hendry could focus more on acquiring a 2B than SS. Sounds counter-intuitive, I know, considering the Cubs have Walker, Hairston, Cedeno, Perez, Fontenot and Theriot, who can all play 2B, and Hendry just lost out on Furcal. But hear me out. I think Hendry is comfortable with Cedeno at SS; I also think Hendry sees Hairston as nothing more than a valuable bench player - right-handed platoon for a left handed hitting CF if you will (Lofton, Pierre, Wilkerson). With a weak corner OF class in free agency, Walker is and has been the obvious trade bait (packaged with prospects) to acquire a RF, or to acquire an expensive starting pitcher, who can then be flipped to a third team for a RF. Those moves could create a hole at 2B - call me the optimist, who doesn't think we'll see Perez starting. I'm thinking that a Graffanino, Mueller and even Grudzielanek signing are not out of the question. And, maybe even a deal for Mark Loretta, Ray Durham, Adam Kennedy, Craig Counsell, Junior Spivey or Jose Vidro (injury risk). As an example, what if the Giants traded Durham and Schmidt to us for Walker, Rusch and pitching prospects. Durham could lead-off and play 2B; might we then flip Schmidt to a team for a corner OF? Just doing some alternative thinking. Hoops
  22. If he did, he went to the wrong place. L.A. isn't winning anything anytime real soon. Let's define winning. If winning means making it to the post season, then I submit that the Dodgers have a better chance than the Cubs in 2006 at this point. Combination of 70% money and 30% post-season shot.
  23. I think that is an excellent point. With Furcal passing on the Cubs, I think the likelihood of acquiring another starting pitcher went up big time. That, in itself, may be fueling the Barry Zito rumours.
  24. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5135614 Manny for Soriano, and/or Wells for Loretta. Would they convert Soriano to OF, if they got Loretta too?
  25. Byrd signs with the Indians. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5137224
