  1. I don't think it feels right to be optimistic about a team that has done the exact opposite of what I wished they'd do, and has not come close to addressing the biggest problems that have plagued them year after year. I'm holding out hope that they'll surprise on the upside, but there's nothing going on to support such hope. Can't argue with your rationale.
  2. Perhaps, I'll be accused of drinking Kool-Aid. Perhaps, the board prefers the "glass is half-empty" pessimism to my "glass is half-full" optimism. But I'll say it: our division doesn't scare me. If we're healthy, we'll be much better than last year. And keep in mind, we played decent against the Central and West, and might have won a few more of those games if Howry and Eyre were around. Our biggest issue was our 11-23 record against the NL East including 1-5 against WAS and 1-6 against ATL. That definitely can't happen again if this club is to win. Am I saying there are no holes? Of course not. There are - no doubt. But, I also didn't think in April or May or June or even July that the Astros would be playing the White Sox in the World Series with those less than stellar offenses. We should continue to be critical. We must. I believe that Cubs brass reads this stuff - I think it makes a difference. At the same time, I just can't be pessimistic in January. It just doesn't seem right.
  3. The Twins won back-to-back-to-back division titles in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and in each of those seasons, Guzman, Jones and Rivas had 1,500 combined at bats. All I'm trying to say is that if the Cubs pitching staff remains healthy, and the re-vampled bullpen is productive, the Cubs are going to be fine.
  4. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=140787 Mr. Miles thinks Patterson and Walker will be dealt, but it sounds like there is no active trade talk with Walker yet.
  5. Don, Good guesses. I am telling you - there has got to be something about his personality for those teams to not want to trade for a $2.5M player with his potential for offensive production. Maybe a Spring Training deal.
  6. Not a clue. And, if it's minor leaguers like many suspect that's definitely not my area of expertise.
  7. Keep the boys healthy, and things should work out.
  8. Just my gut feelings here: As long as Jim Hendry still wants to be the Cubs' GM in 2007, I'd say there is a 99% probability of him having that role in 2007. I'd say only a 90-loss type season in 2006 will cost him his job. Mind you, I don't personally think Hendry has earned another contract, but it's very unlikely that MacPhail and Fitzsimons would let him go. On the flipside, if Dusty Baker still wants to be the Cubs' field manager in 2007, I'd say he needs to guide them into the playoffs in 2006.
  9. The Cubs are in good shape right now after signing Jones so Hendry probably doesn't need to make any more major moves. The Sox need all the help they can get after winning that World Series thingy. It just goes to show you: a healthy, deep rotation can give a GM lots of options; a injury-ridden rotation featuring 'Glendon Rusch' types as a #4/#5 starter basically ties a GM's hands.
  10. Despite what Kenny Williams said in the newspapers the last 2 days, I still think the White Sox will end up with Tejada if he's dealt. They are in the best position to give the O's starting pitching, prospects and an everyday SS.
  11. Heard on ESPN AM 1000 at 6:40 PM Sportscenter Update on 1-5-06: Bruce has reported that 3 AL teams have expressed interest in acquiring Corey Patterson. The report I heard did not mention the team's names. If I were to guess, I'd guess: Boston, Seattle and Baltimore. Hoops
  12. I think it will be Hairston. Both Baker and Hendry had nicer things to say about him in the 2nd half than they did in the 1st half.
  13. I don't agree with your assessment. I don't see finances or Dusty being the issue at all here. If anything, Hendry has shown a penchant to value pitching over hitting. Prior's future with the Cubs is going to come down to his health and his performance trend.
  14. I don't see what Arroyo would provide except an awkward and unbalanced leg kick. He's basically a #5 starter and the Cubs have that with Rusch, Williams, and a potential decline from Maddux. I get the sense that Hendry doesn't believe Rusch or Williams could give him 180 IP with 32 starts. Arroyo probably could.
  15. Could happen, but I don't see it. Perhaps Hendry will have to wait until Spring Training to see if another team suffers a critical 2B injury.
  16. What if Detroit substituted Robertson and Maroth for Bonderman, and Baltimore added Bedard?
  17. Update on these: (1) Koskie, Kennedy, Walker still has some life, but the Blue Jays aren't as high on Walker as they were three days ago, and the Angels seem distracted with the potential of signing Jeff Weaver. (2) Seattle does not want to deal Ibanez until mid-season. Boston still wants Reed, but are not willing to trade Clement for him; Seattle does not want Arroyo or Wells for Reed. Seattle is willing to trade Reed to Boston if a third team enters the picture and takes on Arroyo from Boston in return for a CF and pitching prospect. I.e., Seattle wants the Cubs to give them Patterson and Rich Hill with Reed going to Boston and Arroyo coming to the Cubs. That doesn't seem like a good deal for the Cubs. I wonder if Boston would go for a Patterson for Arroyo straight up deal, and then Boston could package Patterson and one of their own pitching prospects for Reed.
  18. Check this out: http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=119987 "According to sources, at least two teams have offered the Orioles a more attractive package than the current Ramirez and Clement offer the Red Sox have been dangling." Ramirez and Clement sounded pretty attractive. What 2 teams topped that, and with which players? Is it possible Detroit offer Guillen, Bonderman and a prospect?
  19. New update: Hendry was hoping that Pittsburgh would send cash to offset the difference between Walker's $2.5M salary and Wilson's arbitration eligible salary (could be $4.5M). Pittsburgh will not send cash, and Hendry views Wilson as too expensive for a 4th OF role. No deal.
  20. Not necessarily at this point. I can see the Cubs having no issue giving Prior one year deals for the next 2 seasons, say $5M for 2006, and another $8M for 2007 if he has a good 2006. Where it will get really interesting is after the 2007 season when the Cubs have Prior under control for 1 more season. If he refuses their offer for a multi-year deal at that point, then a trade will be probably be made. The Cubs have never been in a hurry in the MacPhail era to go the multi-year route until it is absolutely a necessity. Think of all the 1-year deals signed by Wood and the expected 1-year deals signed by Patterson and Zambrano. It was the year before free agency where Wood, Lee, Ramirez and Barrett got their multi-year deals.
  21. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=139128 2006: $2.25M 2007: $2.75M 2008: $3.25M team option or $300K buyout
  22. I wonder if we can say that Restovich was the Twins version of David Kelton. A lot of promise that didn't pan out short term, but maybe a change of scenery re-energizes them to get back on their trajectory.
  23. I think the implication is that Craig Wilson wouldn't have been made available unless/until the Pirates filled the RF role in a different way, which obviously they did yesterday. I'm not defending Hendry, mind you, as I would have much rather seen Preston Wilson here for a year than Jones for 3, but it sounds like Craig Wilson wasn't even on the radar or available when Hendry was pondering Jacque Jones.
  24. I wish. A former Chicagoan that has ties to the Angels front-office and MLB. He hears a lot of stuff. He told me that Stoneman and Hendry were talking about a Finley for Patterson deal in November, but that Stoneman wouldn't give in to Hendry's request for cash and a prospect. About 4 weeks later Finley was dealt to SF. He very rarely gets the exact deal right, but he has a decent hit rate at players being considered to be moved.
