  1. It appears the Reds will trade the players or player that will net them the most in return. Folks, that player is undoubtably Adam Dunn. The only concern is whether the Cubs have enough in the cupboard to get him. I'd overwhelm the Reds with quantity: Williams, Mitre, Wellemyer, and Dopirak for Dunn. Vance, I read somewhere that the Reds are shopping Casey - it was either to the Red Sox or Dodgers. If they moved him, Cincinnati would just move Dunn over to 1B, correct?
  2. Absolutely agree. Think about this folks: 5 years and $45M for a guy, who has never achieved an OPS over .795, and who's OBP has not been above .352 in the last 4 seasons. This is just not smart.
  3. Actually, the Cubs could compete financially with the offer (3/$40m), but they would probably choose not to, and it would be hard to blame them for a guy, who's OPS has never exceeded .800, and who's OBP has not exceeded .352 during the last 4 seasons. Just pass on him Jim!
  4. While the rumor could be far fetched or even bogus, let's not forget there are always ways that teams can get players to waive their no trade clauses. In one of the the "dumbest" moves ever in recent times , Andy MacPhail agreed to give Fred McGriff an extra year if he would waive his NTC. In recent years, I recall Shawn Green, Jim Thome and several others who did waive. Texas or anybody else for that matter could agree to pick up Wood's 2007 option as an example of how to get him to waive his clause. That option is something like $13.5M - Wood might find it hard to turn that down, especially if he believes the Cubs have no intention of picking it up.
  5. I think the Cubs only end up with Zito and Mench according to the report and the A's get Soriano. Don't understand why the Cubs would make that trade unless they got Furcal and Pierre in the bag. I'm not sure I understand why Oakland would make that deal. Soriano is a Hendry-type player, not Beane-type. Plus, hasn't Mark Ellis turned the corner? I believe the A's will trade Zito (not that they have to from a budget standpoint), but they will demand 2-3 top prospects. I could see Zito to Texas, Soriano and Mench to the Cubs, and some great young talent sent to Oakland.
  6. I like parts of that deal - namely that the Cubs end up with Zito and Soriano, and jettison Wood. Oakland must be getting some excellent prospects.
  7. I haven't read a single thing that said he'd be ready. I've read that they hope he's ready, but they really don't know. I highly doubt he'll start on time in February. He probably won't be ready by opening day. Of course, they'll never admit their stupidity with the bullplen thing that is largely responsible for all the doubt. In fact, I recall it was Larry Rothschild who said recently (paraphrased), that it would be stupid to go into Opening Day 2006 thinking that Kerry Wood would be in the rotation. I think we'll see Hendry sign or acquire a starter later this offseason. Sounds like dollars will be available if Furcal turns the Cubs down.
  8. We're probably looking at: - trading Walker for Bradley - trading Corey and a prospect for Mench - signing Lofton or trading for Roberts as 4th OF insurance - signing Bill Mueller to play 2B - signing another starting pitcher (Weaver, Byrd) knowing Kerry and Maddux are gone after 2006 The wild cards here could be expanding the Bradley deal to include Lowe, or making a big deal with Arizona for an OF (Shawn Green or Luis Gonzalez) and Javier Vazquez, or the Giants for Pedro Feliz and Jason Schmidt. The Cubs would then have the option of moving Lowe, Vazquez or Schmidt to Philly for Bobby Abreu, if he his actually being shopped by Pat Gillick for a front-line starter.
  9. Quality is in the eye of the beholder. And, I'm pretty sure most here won't like Hendry's plans, which probably consist of toolsy players and speed guys on offense, and better pitching.
  10. One of my trusted sources told me yesterday he has great confidence that Hendry has contingency plans in place if Furcal and Pierre fall through.
  11. From what I gather, Hendry's backup plan is to trade Williams, Patterson, Walker and a prospect to Texas for Kevin Mench and Alfonso Soriano. Soriano plays 2B, Cedeno plays SS, Mench plays RF. Then, he either still tries to bring in Pierre, or Bradley, or signs Kenny Lofton for CF. Didn't say I liked it, I just said that was apparently Hendry's backup plan. If he goes that route, he'll have money yet to spend, so I presume he then proceeds to spend the rest of his dough on a pitcher like Millwood, Washburn, Weaver or Burnett. Don, Acquiring Mench really worries me. I don't think he's that good at all. I have no problem with acquiring Soriano (bat him 6th) - has he changed his tune lately on shifting to the outfield?
  12. Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo! Alright, having said that, how do we outbid the Braves to get him? Pie for Lugo and Gathright? I think I read the Devil Rays wanted Marte.
  13. As I asked on the Zambrano/Abreu thread, why not turn around and trade Lowe and a prospect for Abreu?
  14. Here's a thought. As a starting point I go back to a 3-way trade rumor I brought to the board weeks ago where the Dodgers, Cubs, and Marlins would play musical chairs with Lowe, Bradley, Lowell, Castillo, Walker, Patterson and Cubs pitching prospects. Obviously, the Marlins did get rid of their players. I still keep hearing that if the LA signs Furcal, they'll want to dump Bradley and Lowe in the name of salary (but also because of clubhouse reasons). What if they traded Bradley and Lowe for some package involving Corey or Walker and some pitching prospects, and Hendry turned around and shipped Lowe and a prospect to the Phillies for Abreu?
  15. Why do you say that? For cost reasons, the owner has instructed the president and GM to gut the team - that is what they're doing.
  16. What if that move was combined with acquiring Milton Bradley? Then, Bradley-CF Murton-LF Lee-1B Ramirez-3B Soriano-2B Barrett-C Mench-RF Cedeno-SS
  17. That is interesting, and kind of strange. I understand not wanting to be haunted by your own player down the road, but wouldn't you just want the best package available? It's not like they have a chance in 2006, and by the time they are good again some of those guys' careers will be winding down or they could have been traded/signed by another NL team. In 99 I would have been pissed if the Cubs traded Sammy for a lesser package just to send him to an AL team instead of another NL team. Yeah I can understand not wanting to trade within the division but outside of it you only see a team at most 6 to 9 times correct? Very odd strategy and just another reason to be upset at FL management. Don't be too upset with them. At least the Cardinals didn't get him.
  18. I understand the unhappiness, but I got it on good authority that there were 3 NL teams and 2 AL teams involved: Mets, Dodgers, Cardinals, Red Sox, and Twins. I was told that what Florida asked in return from the NL teams was very different than what they asked from AL teams. Let's just say that had the Cubs been involved, they would have been asked to give up triple what the Twins actually gave up to get Castillo. The Mets were asked to give up Milledge, the Dodgers were asked to give up Joel Guzman and the Cards were asked to give up Reyes. I think Florida's strategy was to trade him to the AL. Same strategy used on Beckett/Lowell. Same strategy they'll use with Pierre - I now believe the Rangers and Yankees will have the upper hand on getting him than the Cubs. Delgado was the exception only because his cash was so much, it came down to who'd pick up the most, and the Mets outbid the Red Sox and Angels.
  19. Now might be the time for Hendry to talk to Tampa Bay, and throw it out to the beat writers that he is taking a hard look at Julio Lugo and Aubrey Huff. Let's see how fast Furcal agrees to the Cubs offer then.

  21. This rumor was sent to me by a contact of mine in SoCal. Not one of my best sources, but I have known him for sometime. If the Cubs sign Rafael Furcal to be their SS and lead-off man, Jim Hendry will turn away from Juan Pierre, and instead focus his efforts on dumping CF Corey Patterson onto an AL team in return for a bad, albeit short term contract, and a prospect. Prime candidate: Los Angels Angels of Anaheim. The target: Steve Finley, who is coming off an equally disastrous season, but has 1 year left at $7M, and some feel could easily get re-vitalized in Wrigley, a park he has recently hit extremely well in. And while he may be 40 years old, he figures to be in great shape, with a great arm and hits left-handed, and is just one year removed from hitting 36 home runs as a member of the LA Dodgers and Arizona D-Backs in 2004. He could play CF or RF for one season depending on Hendry's other OF moves. He would be on the bench in favor of Jerry Hairston when facing a left-hander. Hendry may be considering this as a high risk/high return move. Take it with a grain of salt. Haven't heard much about Corey lately, so my ears perked up a bit when I heard this.
  22. What if Furcal told Hendry, "I'll sign with the Cubs just as long as Neifi is playing 2B."
  23. Same contact suggests that if the Cards do trade pitching for Abreu, they will also look seriously at signing Paul Byrd to a 2-year deal.
  24. Because they'd like to move Jeff Kent to 1B.
