  1. When I see how much money the medium market D-Backs are willing to eat for an unproductive player, I can't figure out why big market Hendry won't do the same with the equally unproductive Glendon Rusch, who has one less year and significantly less money owed to him than Ortiz. Must be that lefty thing - different topic for a different day I guess.
  2. Ouch on the pocketbook! He is still owed $19.5M - $3.5M left in 2006, $7.5M in 2007 and $8.5M in 2008.
  3. Vance, here's another comment I wanted to make in regards to the point you made above. There is growing "evidence" (based on the numerous accounts that been have written up during the last 5 days) that the Nationals new management wants to re-stock the farm by trading all players except Ryan Zimmerman and John Patterson. Thus, the following "one-stop-shop" could be open for business before Hendry decides on his club's fate: Livan Hernandez Tony Armas Ramon Ortiz Jose Vidro Alfonso Soriano Jose Guillen Nick Johnson I see a lot more options for buyers in this "store" except for relief pitching.
  4. Vance, Very nice analysis. The Angels are an interesting team. I think they are underachieving, and will make some moves. If Williamson comes back healthy and Nevin can get on a bit of a hot streak, I could see the Cubs moving both to Los angeles to help them in the bullpen and get some production out of 1B/DH - both have been weak areas. Stoneman has inquired about Williamson and Nevin in the past. My gut tells me that Maddux is staying (and will be given a one-year extension). Hoops
  5. Perception is probably reality on this one B to B! Regardless of what the numbers and sabermetrics may actually show, there is surely a perception among GMs around the league that from July through October Jose Contreras was the best pitcher in baseball. With all due respect Hoops, The GMs around the league are, for the most part, not stupid. July -Oct. is hardly the way to measure a pitcher. Especially one with Contreras's track record. And then Jermanie Dye? He has been washed up for for a while. Dye did post an .846 OPS in 2005. Now, he may not be that good, but washed up is a bit harsh. Contreras did have a 3.61 ERA and 1.23 WHIP for the entire season in 2005 - he was bad in the 1st half and stellar in the 2nd half. Considering the trade would free up $17M for Philly in 2007, I think it would be a good deal for them. I'd make the trade if I was Gillick.

  7. A source of mine on the East Coast (same person who told me in December that the Cubs were in the race with another NL Central team to sign Wade Miller) told me this morning that he has heard from 2 Philly contacts that Pat Gillick and Kenny Williams have been discussing a Jose Contreras and Jermaine Dye deal for Bobby Abreu and Gavin Floyd. The 2006 money is just about even with Contreras getting $8M, Dye getting $5M plus $1.15M buyout, and Abreu getting $13M. The Sox have a concern trying to fit Abreu's $15M plus $2M buyout in 2007, but feel that if Gavin Floyd shows progress, they could deal Freddy Garcia or Javier Vazquez next offseason to free up some cash. 2007 rotation would be: Buehrle Garland McCarthy Floyd Garcia or Vazquez No confirmation from any other source, so take it with a grain of salt. 8. he didn't say anything about making more moves. i don't know if that implies he's done. my opinion: we're not done if the right deal came along. it sounds like hendry has been tied up doing the arbitration work with Prior, Z, etc. so the deal-making period may have cooled off for us. we're pretty set other than a starting middle infielder (possibly), but it sounds like Cedeno is getting a starting SS job and we have 3 guys who can play 2B (Perez, Hairston, Walker). M&PM, Thanks for jotting down all the notes. I really appreciate you taking the time to post the specific details of what Hendry discussed on Levine's radio show. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but it almost sounded like Hendry would influence Dusty to bat Murton or Cedeno in the #2 spot. That would be progress, huh? Hoops
  9. I just heard a promo on ESPN AM 1000 that Jim Hendry is scheduled to join Bruce Levine on his radio show "Baseball 365" on Saturday morning at 10 AM CST. In the past shows, Bruce has taken a number of phone calls from fans, so it might be a good forum to question Hendry on issues like Walker and Williams trade rumors, Wood's health, arbitration, extension for Lee, re-doing Ramirez contract, Neifi's role, etc.... I'd be interested (I'm sure others would be too) in hearing a summary of the radio show if anyone happens to listen. Hoops
  10. Hey, don't knock yourself, sometimes silly speculation is the beginnings of a good rumor, which can then ultimately lead to reality. In the age of the internet and sabermetrics, in my opinion the knowledge gap between a real GM and a die-hard student of the game (in terms of understanding player development, player projection and finances) has dwindled down. In all sincerity, I think there are at least 50 people on this site alone, who could make decent GMs. As for new rumors, nothing new than what is already being discussed. I do get the sense that Jerome Williams is not in the club's plans, and therefore believe he will be traded at some point. I think the Cubs question his mental toughness as well as durability. I think the Wade Miller signing tells us more about how Hendry feels Rich Hill can contribute more than it does about Kerry's health. I still think Williams, Hill and Todd Walker will be dealt (either together or separate deals) to acquire bats.
  11. I did. 3-4 weeks ago I told you folks with high probability the Cubs would sign Wade Miller. Edit: December 28th. You are an Internet hero. Hardly. I just happen to have decent contacts, and occasionally happen to be at the right place at the right time. Wish I those types of attributes when it comes to Wall Street!
  12. I would submit to you that a certain beat writer, who happens to frequent our board and occasionally chat with us, was probably involved somehow someway. If I recall, Miller's name first surfaced in said beat writer's column in late December. I bet Miller wasn't even on Hendry's radar until he read that in the beat writer's column. Just a theory mind you.

  14. If the Cubs acquired Lugo (and his $4.95M contract) without shedding any salary of their own, it would probably prevent them from being able to sign Weaver, especially if the payroll is $100M.
  15. Amen. Walker put his 2006 fate into the Cubs hands, now "deal" with it.
  16. Have the Cubs really screwed Walker? I know picking up his option was a security blanket, for the team, but in doing so he has been guaranteed a job next season at 2.5M. Had he been forced into FA, he might have been relegated to NRI status or to take a million or more dollar paycut as a backup. Teams don't seem to be very interested in his services. I agree with you. Financially speaking, I think Hendry did Walker a favor by picking up his option. I didn't see any team giving Walker $2.5M. I think Hendry assessed that while Walker is a fine hitter, his fielding and mouth would not get him more than $2.0M from most teams. Hendry did himself a favor with picking up that option too - the last thing Hendry wants to see is Walker go to St. Louis or the Mets, two post-season threats. By locking his rights for 2006, Hendry can now trade him safely to an AL team or a non-NL contender. It's a good financial and baseball move to pick up his option. I just don't buy that there was any handshake deal. What I buy is that by Walker agreeing to the option clause in the agreement he signed before the 2005 season, he was basically giving the Cubs the right to choose his fate for 2006. They did (or better put, they will soon).
  17. Based on a Dusty Baker soundbite, taken from the convention, and playing on WSCR (I heard it at 1:20 PM on 1-14-06), Kerry Wood will pitch from the bullpen when he is activated. No soundbite on predictions for when he might be activated, or how soon he could join the rotation. Hoops
  18. I had ESPN AM 1000 on this morning driving into the office and during lunch. I didn't hear any mention of a Lugo rumor. Has it died down already, or been refuted, or is it possible the rumor was generated on a National ESPN radio overnight show like GameNight?
  19. From Tampa's perspective, can they get more in return if they do a deal now, or is it better for them to wait until Spring Training, or is it better to wait until the July trading deadline? I would imagine they could get the most for Huff late in spring training - assuming that he doesn't lay an egg during exhibition play. Do your highest value "late in spring training" comments also apply to Lugo, or is he more valuable now or in July?

  21. I'd go with: Pierre Cedeno Lee Ramirez Murton Barrett Jones Hairston
  22. I wonder if, hypothetically, Hendry had to choose Vina or Todd Walker, who would he choose. Think about it in a different way. Knowing the way Hendry has been acting lately, Bavasi probably could have gotten away with trading 2 mediocre minor league prospects (who would never see Safeco Field) in exchange for Todd Walker, and instead still chose to sign Fernando Vina.
  23. After last year, Corey has nothing to stand on. Would look like lots of sour grapes. Fine, I'll settle for any current or former Cub blasting Dusty. I have a feeling Walker will. That's a given. I can't wait to hear what Walker has to say on his way out of town. I'll take the flipside. I could care less about what Walker has to say. He's a malcontent that will have played for 6 different teams over 7 seasons when he's dealt - that tells me enough.
