I thought it interesting in the article that Hendry implies he does plan on keeping Hairston, it looks like he might be planning for a Hairston/Neifi platoon at 2B. Which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world so long as they're hitting 8th.

My read was that the SS job is Cedeno's if they don't trade for Lugo. Good.

Hendry doesn't come right out and say Patterson is finished here, but there's not much doubt from the tone. Ditto for Walker and Nomar.

The disturbing thing to me is that Hendry never learns his lesson; he is yet AGAIN putting all his eggs in one basket, this time Juan Pierre. And no idea what the plan is for RF, Aubrey Huff, say it ain't so!

Overall, things are looking pretty bleak, I hate to say.

I opt to keep a more optomistic outlook. We have around $23 million to spend. And if we are going with Hairston/Perez at 2B and Cedeno at SS (GREAT)

Then we have all that money to spend on CF, RF, and a SP. With Patterson gone that's an extra 2.5 that goes into his replacement player.

Out of curousity, doesn't Perez hit better from the right side?

It's a good thing Baker seems to not like Hairston that much so that at least gives Cedeno a chance to play. I see Perez getting in at least 155 games.

Hmmm, that can be taken more than one way. When I read it, I thought he was just trying to find a subtle way to ask for the link without accusing the poster of forgetting it.

Anyway, Miles' column hit on some of the same points as Kiley's in the Suntimes and Van Dyck's in the Trib. I am optimistic about the Winter Meetings and thankful that the Furcal situation is over so Hendry can refocus his efforts.

It looks like Juan Pierre is going to be a top priority and (good or bad) the Cubs are going to go all out to get him. If it happens, I hope its quickly so we can move on... I also wouldn't mind Lugo especially if that somehow meant that Ronny could play 2B fulltime. However, Huff's declining numbers and hit-or-miss defense scares me. I am somewhat surprised to see Abreu's name pop up in these reports because I doubt the Cubs are going to give up Zambrano or Prior (as the article suggests). Van Dyck also mentions Cliff Floyd as a possibility for RF.

Edited to correct link.

P.S. Phil Rogers irks

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of having Lugo as our everyday SS. Move Cedeno over to 2b and get someone like Wilkerson or Bradley for Cf. But I would definitely like to see Hendry trade for Lugo at this point, much more than trading for Pierre.

If the Cubs pick up a shortstop Cedeno will be effectively nailed to the bench. Dusty's pet will get the majority of the starts at 2B.

That's Dusty's way of thanking Neifi for the recruiting job he did on his "friend" Furcal.
