I think you can look at Pedros stats this year and say it might have been a mistake, but I think you may have to wait until that 3rd year to see how it really works out. The mets could be paying an awful lot for and old aging pitcher that 4th year.

Jmo but if Boston repeats this year, the 3rd and 4th year are irrelevant. If they were a mid-market team, I'd agree w/ them not gambling on a 3rd or 4th year, because if he doesn't perform, those seasons are probably over. However, Boston has the 2nd biggest budget in baseball and can afford having a guy not performing who's paid $14 million. Of course, I have a bias toward really good starting pitchers.

I think I would have paid the 4 years for Pedro since the org. has a big payroll. The value of a Pedro going twice in a post season can't be over estimated. Esp since Schilling was doubtful. I would have signed Pedro and passed on Clement. Who needs a first half pitcher when you expect to go to post season?

If Pedro doesn't make it year 3 or 4 as a starter maybe he could slip into the pen and still be valuable. Even if you have to blow off year 4, going deep into the playoffs or winning another WS. makes it worthwhile.

What I would NOT have done was the Renteria contract, ridiculous for a SS with his nos. And I wouldn't have done the Varitek contract ( too old).

Varitek's one of their leaders and a real productive catcher, so that imo wasn't a poor deal. Clement & Renteria are the one's to question given that money could have went to Pedro.
