Craig Biggio signed a one-year extension with the Astros Sunday.

Amid the champagne celebration in the clubhouse after clinching the NL wild card with a 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs, the Astros announced $4 million, one-year contract extension for Biggio through 2006, which will be his 19th season -- all in Houston.

The real question will be what the Astros do with Bagwell. He has a 17.5 million dollar option for 2006. If the Astros decline the option, they can save 7.5 million with a 10 million dollar buy-out. I'm pretty sure they'll decline the option, but ten million is a very steep buy-out.

The Astros will have over 30 million tied into three players next season:

Biggio (4 million), Pettite (17 million), and Bagwell (10 million minimum).

Add in Berkman's 10 million, and that's a minimum 41 million for four players. If Clemens returns, he'll command 15-17 million as well. I don't look for the Astros to be too active in FA signings this year when you consider Ensberg, Everett, and Lidge are all arbitration eligible.

Vance,

Are you sure about this? I think the contract is guaranteed for 2006 at $17M. I think the Astros have the option in 2007.

You may be right...hmmm. I was certain I had it right, but I'll have to check.

You're right, Hoops. Bagwell is guaranteed 17 million next season (6 million is deferred however) with 18 million for 2007 with the 10 million dollar buy-out.

To revise my figure (not including defered money), the Astros will have 42 million ties up in Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman, and Pettitte. With what they'll have to pay the other players in the line-up, I wouldn't expect any additions to the Astros this offseason.

Vance,

Don't forget the $11M they will pay Roy Oswalt. And, the way Bagwell's deal is structured, he also gets $3M of his signing bonus in 2006. In short, unless Drayton McLane is planning for a big expansion of sorts, the Astros appear to have some off-season cash flow issues - also, I believe Ensberg and Lidge are arbitration eligible.

7 million of Pettitte's salary next year is deferred.

Right you are, but they owe Clemens 3 million of his 2004 salary in 2006.

I also think they owe Kent some money in 2006, but I can't say definitively.

Isn't he making 18 this season, I can't see him taking a paycut after one of/if not his best season of his career.

i know how this will go.

biggio will come back and hit 30 home runs against the cubs. when he's not being walked, he will hit a home run. but only against the cubs. he will finish the season with 30 home runs.

bagwell might come back, i don't care if he does or not.

clemens will say that he's 99.999999999999% retired in february. then he will show up at spring training like nothing happened. dominate the league again, posting a sub 1 era on his way to another cy young.

vizcaino will continue to kill us in bi pinch hitting situations..

jason lane and lance berkman will join biggio in the "30 home runs in a seasons against the cubs" club.

the astros will be 50 games under .500 by the all-star break, mcclain will anounce that he's not selling anyone and believes that the stros are still in the race. houston will go on to win 70 games in a row and win the wild card.

oswalt will hit several cub players with pitches, injuring them, to add injury to insult.

brad lidge's arm, amazingly, will not fall off for a third staright overworked season, despite throwing his sliders at 128 mph.

brandon backe will throw 3 shutouts against the cubs and then be given his outright release for not having any idea of how to pitch against any other team.

the astros will be in the playoffs, the cards will have 147 wins, and an american league team will again win the WS.
