SL Playoff Discussion: Jaxx vs Suns for the Championship!

I don't want this to take the place of the nightly box scores and discussions, but there will be lots to talk about as the SL Playoffs begin Wednesday night with Game 1 of the Northern Division Playoffs in Jackson.

 

Here is the schedule for the SL playoffs.

We moved our game on Friday to 5:05 p.m. CDT. That is game three of the series with the Mudcats.

 

BTW, Chris, you did hear right. I had to shave my head. It was a bet I made with the guys after falling behind by five games in mid-August. The bet was made on the way back home to Jacksonville after the Jaxx had been swept by the Suns.

:shock: on shaving your head! I thought you said on a broadcast earlier this season that you would never make a bet with a team again! Very cool of you to follow through, most people would've backed out or at least tried to.

I heard at the game that Ron was going to shave his head. My first thought was, 'surely not!' I was going to email him and ask him not to, with all that beautiful hair. Ouch! But I was too late. Now that he has, we have got to get DJAXXFAN to take a picture and put it on the NSBB. I hope this does not jink the jax.

Not sure I've ever heard going on the disabled list as moving on to bigger and better things before...

I saw the replay of Jim Edmond's catch where he dove and caught the ball at the base of the center field fence. All you could see was dust from the warning track. That reminded me of center fielder Buck Coat's catch when he dove and caught the ball in the ninth inning with runners on base and saved the game for the DJaxx. A big cloud of dust!

The pitching for the Suns are Jaxx will come into the Championship series absolutely smoking! Jacksonville gave up 2 runs to Birmingham over their sweep

And the Jaxx gave up (you guessed it) 2 runs to Carolina! Oh man this should be a great series!

Looking over some of my notes, here are the recaps from the Jaxx vs Suns in 2005:

 

The Jaxx went 2-6 vs the Suns, getting outscored 48-27. Pinto hasn't had a start against the Suns. J.K. is 1-1, Nolasco is 1-1, Marmol is 0-2. Baez and Connolly also took losses. However, we also had a losing record against the Mudcats (7-9) going into the playoffs and look how that series went!

 

Both pitching staffs have been outstanding leading into the Championship series. This should be a great one!

I'm pretty sure they did in 2000 when the Jaxx won the title. I would expect (and hope) the team or the league to have championship shirts made.

It was the Suns that the Jaxx beat in 2000 to win the title as well.

 

Regarding the 2-6 in the regular season, there was a 2-2 series split in late June at Pringles Park. The Jaxx won 2 of the first 3, winning the first game 7-4 behind Ryu, losing the second that Marshall started 5-4 in extras, and winning the third that Nolasco started 7-6. In the final game of the series, the just promoted awful Marmol was smacked around, and the Jaxx were blown out 11-2. The starters for the Suns in those games were Hull, Hanrahan, Orenduff and Edwin Jackson. Chad Billingsley for some reason was working out of the 'pen at the time, it seems. The big offensive forces for the Jaxx in that series were Greenberg, Coats and Bacon.

 

The Jaxx were then swept 4-0 by the suns in Jacksonville in mid August. It was a series of terrible bullpen work by the Jaxx - Baez (twice), Searles (twice) and Aardsma all guilty - and not much offence from the bats - they managed just one extra base hit the entire series. O'Malley, Nolasco (unhelped by his defence) and Marmol all made quality starts, though Ryu in the final game was roughed up a bit. The starters for the Suns were Juarez (pitched to just one batter), Hanrahan, Edwin Jackson and Orenduff. Again, the Jaxx missed Chad Billingsley.

 

 

When does this series start, by the way? The Suns seem pretty adamant it starts on Tuesday, but the Jaxx have been saying Wednesday all along, and that's what the schedule says...?

I have no clue why the Suns would be saying that the series starts Tuesday. The series starts Wednesday and there's a game every day until the series ends with no travel day.

Maybe there was a change in schedule due to the fact that both divisional series were sweeps. I see on the website for the Suns that Game 1 is Tuesday. :-k
