Just pure speculation, but here's a quote from http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/4817678

Look for the Red Sox to finally trade left fielder Manny Ramirez this off-season. A thin free-agent market for sluggers will intensify the demand for Ramirez, and the Sox likely will be willing to pay some of the $57 million remaining on his contract through 2008 and/or take back salary in return. The Mets, Marlins and Rangers would be among the potential suitors for Ramirez — and don't rule out the Nationals under new ownership, especially if Jim Bowden remains general manager.

Ramirez will gain 10-and-5 status — 10 years of service, five with the same club — at the end of the season, giving him the right to veto any deal. But given that he has repeatedly asked to be traded in recent seasons, he almost certainly would welcome a change. Imagine a Marlins' middle order that included Ramirez, Carlos Delgado and Miguel Cabrera. ...

I doubt the Cubs would be players, as the Cubs know how fun it is to hold large contracts with sluggers with controversy, but its worth talking about...

Will we have enough to win the bidding war, though? I know we'll have a bunch of money to play with with Sammy's money off the books, but we have a ton of holes to filll.

Suggest that mods combine this with the earlier Manny thread where we had some pretty good discussion re our chances of getting him.

My opinion remains the same: its a no-brainer. If we can get him, we should do what we have to to put him in a Cubs uni.

if we can get him, we should? one player doesn't make a baseball team. i'd love Manny for a reasonable price, but that isn't going to happen. great offensive player, monster contract.

would you rather have Manny in LF or decent players all over the OF and some help in the pen? what do you think benefits a team more?

Again, I don't want to rehash the same convo again. See here, beginning about half-way down the page:

One issue I may not have fuloly addressed - yes, I think we can get Manny and still address our other issues. And in light of what else appears to be available, I'd rather have Manny, Pie and a PTBNL than three avg guys in our OF. Manny is well on his way to being an all-time great.
