Wow. Apparently that sort of nickname is unacceptable, but only during the postseason? The names are tributes, sheesh.

Well that's one way of looking at it... the true Illinois native Americans might prefer getting their land back over having a college attended by very few native Americans name its mascot after a tribe that used to live there.

This is absolutely retarted. Political correctness at an insane level.

I'm sure one of their banned teams is the Mississippi College Choctaws which is retarted seeing how the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians is very much in favor of the school using "Choctaws". Plus they have a high percentage of Choctaws who go to Mississippi College. I myself am 1/16th Choctaw and this is just so stupid. Ughhhhh, naming the University after the Choctaws was done as a TRIBUTE to those who lived in the area before we got here. Gosh.

and you can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which gets filled first. I'd like to sleep with Elisha Cuthbert, but that isn't happening. :P There is NOTHING insulting about tribe names being school mascots. Do you think they named FSU the Seminoles, or MC the Choctaws out of some maliciousness??? C'mon. The only Indian name that I have trouble with is Redskins, I could easily see how that is offensive.

o rly

this is about college names, not professional. I've already expressed my disdain on this board for the Redskins and Indian Joe as being stereotypical.

i don't understand how it's ok for a college to do it, but it's not ok for a team like cleveland. if your university is actually praised by the indians for which it's named, then fine. i think it's stupid, but if the people themselves don't care, then whatever. it's just such a silly thing to name a sports team after a race of people. indians are PEOPLE. i don't think it's a matter of political correctness, it's a matter of progression and good taste.

if the new york mets became the new york jews, people would go nuts. you can't have a double standard. i went to minooka high school, clearly an indian name, and our nickname was the indians. our school newspaper was the peace pipe chatter, and you could go buy minooka t-shirts and stuff during football games at this place called the trading post. that's just so... lame. i'm not offended by it per se, but it's just stupid. it's the year 2005 for jiminy cricket's sake, can't we come up with something besides a RACE of HUMANS to be a school's name? the vast majority of native american's don't approve of this, and they're the ones being defamed, so i'm with them.

and notre dame... i hate notre dame, and i'm not gonna touch them with 10 foot jesus pole

Let's take a look at the names that have been banned by the NCAA. Some I think rightfully so are offensive, but most are not.

The only two on the list that I think are offensive are the Carthage College REDMEN and the Southeastern Okie State SAVAGES.

You can't possibly tell me that the majority of these schools that are banned are offensive. Even their logos seem pretty harmless and seem to glorify the Native American spirit, etc. This is politcal correctness gone mad

Do you have a statistic to back that up? Because the Indians that I know readily support the MC Choctaws.

So all mascots should be furry animals in your opinion. Not people? Because surely this is 2005, we can't dare have people as mascots.

And like i've said before, there is a VAST difference in Indian Joe, Redmen, Redskins, Savages etc as compared to Utes, Choctaw, Sioux, Seminoles, Illini

hey guy, i'm not an indian, i'm like a quarter swede, so i'm not offended at all. if real authentic genuine indians don't like it and are offended by it, then i say it's offensive. it's still a race of people, regardless of how the logo or name or whatever is portrayed

ahahahahahaha... um, yes?

what if a team were the blacks or the jews or the spainards or the dusty busters, then what? it's ok because they're indians? i don't get it. answer me why it's ok for us to name our teams and schools after races of indians, but if i wanted to make my school the University of Illinois-Shorewood Jews, i'd be run out of town.

describing things as [expletive] certainly isn't politically correct on any level. i wish you wouldn't do that.

If people say they are offended, I don't think that a bunch of white people have any right to tell them that they aren't. If these mascots were actually tributes, the white people who established them would have named them all in honor of themselves.

Notre Dame Irishmen is a lousy example since it actually was a bunch of Irish people who were on the committee that picked the name or whatever. And despite that, if there were/are Irish people who were offended by the nickname, I'd support getting rid of it as well.

Alright then, so why were they named after these tribes if not for tributes? I guess in your view MC was named Choctaws so the "white people" could always remember how badly we conquered these people, is that it?

Why are you always so high and mighty? Unbelievable.

Retarted according to websters can also mean "To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede." I'll use whatever words I please, I don't need you or any other PC police on my case. If people are allowed to preach hatred in this country and incite violence according to the first amendment then I damn well can use the word "retarted"

quit nitpicking. jesus.

yeah i'm sure the indians feel nothing but pride when they see some 20 year old dork dressed up like one of them at halftime of the big game

if you dont want to answer that's fine, but i dont see what you definition had to do with your usage. context clues lead one to believe that you were not referring to the speed at which things were occurring.
