I was being sarcastic there. I think they'll win around 75. They might even finish above .500.

If I had to bet, I'd say we finish 10 games above them, 77 & 87 or 78 & 88 or so.

I just hope a hot streak that I assume you and others project us to get on does indeed happen. I'm waiting for it, although admittedly I want it right now.

I know you guys made fun of the Brewers going like a game under .500 against the Pirates, Padres and Braves, which does deserve some mocking. But we just went 7-6 against the Mets, Pirates, Padres and Marlins. Those teams are either the same ones they played or worse than the Braves.

The one game above .500 during this easyish stretch is exactly the one game above we are for the season. We need to do better.

Maybe they shock people and beat up on the Nats and get this party started, although I'm not sure how optimistic even the elite players on this board are of that happening the next four days.

I was mocking the Brewers because they suck and worrying about them is silly. I really don't care what they do against any opponents. They mean nothing to me.

This is fair.

But that's also what was said at the beginning of June. Now it will be said at the beginning of July. The goal posts keep having to be moved, and that sucks.

That said, I'm also not worried about them for the simple fact that the Cubs could finish fifth and we'd still have a championship within the past 12 months. It sort of takes the edge off.

Who is moving goalposts? I've never claimed we'd run away with this division by the start of June or by the start of July. It's going to take awhile. We have to start playing better (which we have). And it takes awhile to separate from a team that is ahead of you. There's not going to be some magical 20-game winning streak starting tomorrow that puts them in the dust.

Not you moving them. Just the general consensus. I would have thought with as garbage as the Brewers are thought to be that many would have projected us in first by the end of June since we didn't have many games to make up in a month to put us there.

OK. Let's get specific. At around what date will the Cubs be in first? And at around what date will we be five games up on the field?

I also want to make sure you realize that I ask these things because I have the utmost respect for Duker's knowledge rather than trying to pin you on exact dates.

No idea.

Again, no idea. At some point this season. With the rotation performing better, particularly Arrieta, and with Montgomery pitching well, I feel more confident in it happening sometime soon. The offense is already picking it up. Injuries might delay it some. But if Zobrist comes back and is healthy, and Hendricks comes back in July sometime, and assuming we pick up another pitcher before the trade deadline, I would expect to pull away from them in August. I'd think even without those things, we can get up a couple of games by the end of July.

Cubs have alternated wins and losses for the last 15 games except for a 3-2 win over SD on a game that should have been a loss to keep the pattern going.
