Villanueva is already on the 40 man. So yes, but he won't be adding to the current roster since he's there right now.

 

But not long ago, BN noted that if he isn't added to the big league roster after next ST, he can opt for free agency. I'm kind of surprised that they have yet to try him out anywhere other than 3B thus far. I'd assume that any future that he has as a Cub would be in a super sub type role.

 

Speaking of roster decisions, it's sort of interesting that they had PJ Francescan starting for Iowa. He's Rule 5 eligible, and the perfect example of a guy that somebody would pick with a Rule 5; could be stashed in somebody's pen, and perhaps be a solid middle reliever. Not somebody that we'd miss terribly, but if there were an open roster spot, and it came down to him or another Schlitter or Coke, then sure.
