Yeah, I was always told the leg kick was a timing mechanism.

 

i guess i didn't realize that the more aggressive were still that. i knew that about toe taps and maybe light kicks, but i thought big kicks were part of an attempt to swing harder. shows what i know, i guess.

Oh yeah, those are definitely an attempt to generate more power.

They can be both.

Unless that's just a weird camera view on those videos it looks like Javy closed his stance way up as well, almost Bryant like.

 

They were talking a couple weeks ago that Javy is crowding the plate (get more coverage on the outside pitch), closed his stance up a bit, and isn't doing the big kick on pitches with 2 strikes.

video i posted of a double a few days ago shows him not doing the kick with one strike also

But in addition to this, his stance does look more closed because of the camera angle.
