it's weird to be excited about Cubs baseball in any capacity these days.

True, but this year's draft/signings is a helluva lot more fun than the on-the-field product of the big club

Bonus for #Cubs 25th-rder Rock Shoulders was $294k. State JC of Florida 1B led Fla jucos with 14 HRs this spring.

Rock Shoulders just passed Rebel Ridling for most awesome name in the system. Congrats Rock!

Nah, I still prefer Rebel as it's a given name, to the best of my knowledge. Rock is close, but saying Roderick Shoulders takes some steam out of the name.

Kendall Rogers is holding a chat on PG's web site: http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=6133

Comment From Travis

Did you ever get official confirmation that Maples signed? You're still the only source I've seen report it...

Kendall Rogers: Travis,

I didn't say Dillon Maples signed, I said he WILL sign. Big difference. Be patient my friend.

Comment From Jon

Will the cubs sign both Baez and Vogelbach and what will shawon dunston jr do? Thanks!

Kendall Rogers: Will check on Dunston. Will sign Baez and Vogelbach for sure.

Cubs sign 4th rounder Tony Zych for $400k. Louisville RHP has big arm, possible closer if he refines slider

Not really unexpected, but in his aforementioned chat K. Rogers says this about Jacquez:

Jacquez is going to school barring some crazy last-second decision.

Damn. I really liked Jacquez.

But, if we get Maples, Dunston, Vogelbomb, and Baez you can't complain.

When was the last time the Cubs ponied up for a HS arm like Maples in the middle rounds?

@KendallRogersPG: He signed couple days ago, but just found out #Cubs 15th-rdr Trey Martin, a #KennesawState signee, inked for $250k.

Chris Huseby got $1.3 million as an 11th rounder back in 2006. Hopefully Maples is far superior.

OK, so from what I can make, heres my amateur breakdown of how these guys are being viewed:

Exciting

Baez

Vogel-bomb

Zych

Dunston

Maples

Jacquez

Intriguing

DeVoss

Scott

Gretzky

Marra

Dugas

Schlect

Hoilman

Shoulders

Jensen

Dreamy

Easterling

Are the rest pretty much filler, or is their someone else I'm missing out on?

I'd definately put Neftali Rosario on the "Interesting" list. He's more than holding his own in a small sample size at Mesa right now. He just turned 18.

Austin Urban, Neftali Rosario and Trey Martin belong somewhere on that list.

By my count, the Cubs have spent $2,883,950 on DeVoss, Zych, Scott, Rosario, Gretsky, Shlect, Martin, McKirahan, Shoulders, Jensen and Urban.

Dunston tweeted yesterday that we should know his decision today. Joeyb and another poster are saying he's going to sign (JoeyB said first round money). Sweet. I honestly don't one bit care if we overpay, it's nice to see this be a priority for once.

On Dunston, I really like what I see from the videos i've watched. I think he could be a good one. Extremely fluid at everything.

Just to throw a name out there I thought Andrew McCutchen. Sadly, another name was Juan Pierre, but Juan Pierre wouldn't be a bad outcome for an 18 year old HS kid in the big picture...A purely LH Bernie Williams also came to mind.

Anyway, he might be my favorite draft pick. For some reason I get the feeling his talent got overshadowed by sheer numbers in this draft. Hopefully they sign him. This sounds like crazy talk, but I'd prefer signing him to Maples if it had to come to that.

but does he remind you of any white players?

Steve Finley maybe....wide range with Dunston. I'm actually thinking college might do him some good...The wide range includes guys who aren't/weren't all that good too.

I heard the Cubs offered first round money for him...makes sense since thats what I thInk he'd be in 3 years easy.

Yeah, I heard Dunston's offer is 7-figures (1st rd money).

Also, just Tweeted:

@KendallRogersPG: Sources feel good about possibility of #Cubs 11th-rdr and #Vanderbilt signee Shawon Dunston Jr. signing. we'll see what happens.

Chris Husby?

Big 6'7" righty. IIRC, junior year, was considered a top prospect, but had surgery (TJ?) that kept him off the radar senior year. Cubs kept tabs on him. Showed some flashes early in his minor league career (solid season in Peoria's pen in 2009), but control/mechanic issues eventually got to him, and last year, asked to move to the OF (or Cubs moved him, don't recall off the top), as he just couldn't handle pitching last year.

I'm far more intrigued with Jensen than I am with, say, Zych, to be honest. Actually, of the arms in the draft, I'm not sure Jensen doesn't intrigue me more than Maples/Scott, but Maples has shown better stuff.

I'm not all that intrigued with Dugas/Hoilman to be honest. I'd like Bradley Zimmer, and he'd be on my intriguing list if he signed (haven't seen any news on that, though).

man the cubs are giving crazy money to everyone. again, rather have them blowing big money on amateur talent than the john grabows of the world, but i don't think anyone saw dunston as a late first round money type.
