So presumably he's looking down on guys when benches clear or mounds are charged or people celebrate a walkoff win...unless it's involving a team locked in a division/WC/postseason race.

Or maybe they're just ALL savages.

Jesus get a [expletive] clue. I said earlier that I wouldn't have chosen the term savage.

That doesn't change the fact that you are totally misusing it.

How am I "misusing" it? I explained how the video of a player pissed at an ump don't stack up to the definition that you posted, and Scott's use of it makes him sound like an ignorant fool.

Nope. Every so often you'll get a real nutjob in baseball like Bradley. Most of the time, however, it's just jocks venting by throwing a hissyfit and putting on a show for the fans and their teammates to either act tough or try to distract from how they just screwed up. That said, even someone like Bradley isn't a "savage." Civilized people fight and throw fits and rant and so on all the time. It can, and often is, a sign if immaturity or even mental illness, but to make the huge leap that someone throwing a tirade in a sports game is somehow suddenly a "savage" or an "animal" and divorced from civilized humanity is absurd, especially when it's coming from an birther oaf like Scott chucking banana chips at a young Hispanic player and talking about him like he's some kind of misbehaving pet.

Alrighty I'll put you in the savage = cannibal camp too

So you were posting the definition to show that you're idea of "savage" is wrong and ridiculous? Because otherwise that post made no sense.

Au contraire mon freire.

I posted the definition to show that *your* idea of "savage" is wrong and ridiculous.

so you are saying that because it's a winter league game, players shouldn't care?

You are seriously pathetic. Take out the word meaningless if it's going to keep you up at night. Makes no difference to me.

(a) personal attacks are against board rules.

(b) if i take out the word meaningless, it reads: "You see nothing resembling that in the video I linked of Pie freaking out in a winter league game?"

the part about the winter league game, even without meaningless, suggests to me that you believe these games do not matter.

Haha you'd have 80,000 posts rather than 40,000 if you spent your day policing every personal attack on this board.

I guess I'm special.

Maybe this will help you see the light friend: if Pie had behaved this way in a MLB game, I'd have the same reaction. So all of your semantic hand-wringing is a pointless waste of time.

so are you of the opinion that every player who charges a pitcher or vociferously and vehemently argues with an umpire can reasonably be called a savage? was lou piniella a savage? how about bobby cox?

Don't pretend for a moment that the way Pie behaves has anything to do with how you react. Your [consistently opposing] reaction is a function of the way the board feels about a topic, not some strongly held beliefs you already possess.

As to the point of semantic hand-wringing... aren't you the one trying to prove the difference between calling Pie a savage and saying he's acting like one? It seems you're playing up the semantics angle stronger than anybody else.

let's also recognize that we're being asked to assume that luke scott, a hick from the backwoods of florida, knows the dictionary definition of "savage" and is using the term in that context when speaking about pie. not to mention the part where he's throwing plantain chips at a latin american player.

Frankly I don't give a crap about the way Pie behaves. But knowing what I know, and having seen him blow a gasket more than once, I think Scott was spot on with his comments, and the general sentiment he expressed: Pie has a habit of acting like a jerk, and so people will begin to perceive him as such.

Posted
But calling a Latin American player an animal and throwing banana chips at him while you do = not a jerk.

yeah i have heard the stories about pie going out and drinking, not listening to coaches enough, so i can appreciate a veteran player taking him aside and saying "look man, you've got a lot of talent but you've already alienated one organization and you haven't proven a thing in the majors, and you're not going to get many more chances."

i can't really appreciate a guy who says you're acting like an animal, a savage, and throws plantain chips at him. there are ways to get a message across without being a dumb bigot.

Posted
Seems like a lot of false outrage to me. If some player everyone likes had made these comments, there would be no reaction at all IMO.

a player everyone likes wouldn't make these comments because he wouldn't call latin american guy a savage and throw plantain chips at him. people who do things like that are generally DISliked by fans.

Perfect. Why didn't the thread end here?

Quick question... how on Earth did Luke Scott earn the Birther label?

Please, just stop.

Just stop what?

Writing your thoughts. They are stupid.

There's nothing wrong with being contrarian sometimes. It keeps the board moving and it'd be boring if we all agreed with one another.

But Luke Scott is the wrong horse to back.
