Did he retire, leave, or what? I saw and heard about the posting for the P.A. announcer job at Wrigley (Pat and Keith talked about it on WGN today). Anyone know what the deal is?

The posting is to replace Paul Friedman, the guy who does weeknight games, I believe.

Messmer hasn't been the full-time PA guy for a while now; I don't know if that's been the case since the shooting or not, but he hasn't held sole ownership of the job for quite some time. His duties these days are providing the only rendition of the anthem you need on an afternoon of blue skies and green ivy and doing PA for the occasional day/weekend game.

 

As said, Paul Friedman is the one being replaced, as he "leaves to pursue another opportunity."
