If you're going after a free agent veteran reliever, he's one to target. Sub-3.00 xFIP every year but one.

He is 40, but it's just a one-year deal, significantly minimizing the risk if he falls off a cliff. Good move.

fwiw, ERA/FIP/xFIP aren't great stats for relievers.

What is, outside of peripherals I guess?

probably just the peripherals. because relievers come in and out so frequently nowadays their ERA is pretty heavily dependent on what happens after they leave the game. and ERA doesn't take into account their effectiveness in not giving up runs when entering the game with runners on base.

i know that ERA is not a good stat for relievers. FIP probably sucks too. not sure about xFIP. BP has a couple of stats that i like.
