CHICAGO -- Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly played catch on Friday to test his left shoulder and said he's had no setbacks since undergoing arthroscopic surgery in early November.

Lilly -- the Cubs' lone All-Star in 2009, when he went 12-9 with a 3.10 ERA in 27 starts -- worked out at Northwestern University with pitching coach Larry Rothschild and some of his teammates. They are in town to take part in the 25th Cubs Convention, which opened Friday at the Chicago Hilton.

"It was a nice, moderate day of catch," Lilly said. "I played catch with [prospect] Andrew Cashner. His arm definitely looks healthier than mine."

Lilly had the procedure performed on Nov. 3 and was expected to miss the first month of the 2010 regular season. He said the time off has made him appreciate the game even more.

Is there any particular reason they waited until Novemeber to have this done? Granted, yes it was relatively late in the season where the Cubs were still technically "in it," but why not have this done, say, just a month earlier at the beginning of October?

I wondered the same thing at the time. I can only imagine they had to wait for inflammation to go down or something? They can't be that incompetent, can they?

That or he was trying to see if he could rehab without surgery.

I think it was something like they were hoping that doing nothing would work, and when it didn't, they cut him.
