Well here's an interesting deal that never came to be. According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, a four-team trade involving Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell, Luis Castillo, and Gary Matthews Jr. fell apart at the winter meetings for an undisclosed reason.

 

According to a source, the deal would have sent Bradley to the Rays, Burrell and Castillo to the Cubs, and Matthews Jr. to the Mets. Burrell would have then been spun off elsewhere. No word on what the Halos would have received, though getting rid of Sarge Jr. and presumably at least part of his contract would have been a win.

In hind site, that sure looks like a sweet deal considering what we ended up with.

Maybe. I don't really think Luis Castillo would help our team out very much. Plus we probably would have had to accept just as crappy of a contract for Burrell. OK no contract could ever be as crappy as Silvas but still.

Also I don't think that could be the entire deal. I could be wrong but I don't think Bradley alone could get us Burrell and Castillo. If we had to give money or prospects in that deal, I definitely wouldn't even think of doing it.

Yeah, a variation of that deal was on the table and being seriously discussed, although the Cubs would have only gotten Castillo. Each team would have received one player. In the end, too many moving parts. Cubs were not in line to receive more than Castillo.

Also I don't think that could be the entire deal. I could be wrong but I don't think Bradley alone could get us Burrell and Castillo. If we had to give money or prospects in that deal, I definitely wouldn't even think of doing it.

 

Obviously I don't know any more than what I posted (about being the entire deal), but you make it sound like getting both Burrell and Castillo is a good thing.

I don't think it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if both of them required more than just Bradley. Than again, maybe when you completely factor in their large contracts, I could be wrong.
