Favorite Total War game

No idea how many people here have played more than one of the series, but I might as well ask. RTW guy here.

 

edit: there is a series of games known as the "Total War" series. 5 games, all called "____: Total War". It's probably the most popular strategy game series of the decade.

It's ROME and nothing is even close. The game engine works so much better than the others.

 

I've also got the Medieval and Empire games. I don't like the Medieval engine and Empire is just really buggy. I think they released it too soon.

 

The modification "Roma Surrectum" is an awesome mod for Rome btw.

 

It's got a much more historical accurate feel to it, including a larger map with more cities.

I've played RS a little and Europa Barbarum somewhat more, but I generally prefer the less modded game for pure entertainment. It is impressive how much historical work has gone into some of the mods (and funny comparing the ratio of historical work to basic editing work)

I've played numerous mods including EB and SPQR, but I settled on RS for whatever reason. I think mainly because I like the map size. Also, the new version of RS has VERY realistic and cool new terrain features.

My favorite tactic in Rome is to position an army to where the attacking force has to cross a bridge. You just stick one or two good defensive units at the bridgehead and have about 3 or 4 units of catapults just open fire on the enemy units that are bottlenecked using fire shots.

 

Have you played Empire yet? I was super looking forward to it and it's not a terrible game, but it's crazy laggy. I have a pretty dang good gaming computer and it still has issues with lag.

 

And I've never been able to get into Medieval. The fast-forward button is very slow and that bothers the piss out of me. Plus the whole princess thing is just stupid.

I got ETW right after release and played it through the major first few patches until the ginormous money nerf. If you're on a multi core computer, you need to screw with CPU allocation to fix ETW lag (most of it, anyway. It involved assigning certain cores to certain things, unassigning them, and then reassigning them, but I forget it now.). Medival two was so much better than the first one. The first big M:TW game I got into was as the Egyptians and I was about 30% of the way towards a victory when my ridiculously old king died of natural causes and then his son died the next year of natural causes and his son of 15 years died of natural causes... game over.

that's your misfortune! turn based strategy game, but when you fight another army, it zooms in and you to control the individual units in your army. It's insanely addictive.

Although Shogun will always be a favorite of mine. I haven't tried Empire, fairly sure my computer couldn't handle it without a new card.
