Pitcher LD%


Project Prospect has a chart with the LD% of a great many pitching prospects from this last year, minimum of 100 batters faced. Here are the Cubs on the list:

 

AAA - Avg = 18.7, Std Dev = 3.9

Berg - 16.7

Atkins - 18

Parker - 19.5

Gaub - 19.7

Caridad - 20.9

Samardzija - 21.6

Russell - 23

 

AA - Avg = 17.1, Std Dev = 4.6

Cashner - 18.4

Jackson - 18.8

Schlitter - 20.1

Chen - 21

Lambert - 21.7

Russell - 28.7

Cales - 30.9

 

High A - Avg = 13.8, Std Dev = 4.6

Dolis - 11.8

Searle - 11.8

Jackson - 15.8

Cales - 17.8

 

Low A - Avg = 15.3, Std Dev = 3.6

Antigua - 7.9

Huseby - 11.9

Archer - 13.5

LD% for pitchers is relatively uncontrollable at least in the majors/high minors, correct? If that is the case (I am pretty sure it is), then these numbers are a good sign since our luck was slightly worse than average for most of the high minors pitchers. Does seem more like the low minors LD% is skill-influenced though, as Antigua is ridiculously low which makes sense against low minors hitters given his stuff and style. Anyhow, thanks for posting these interesting numbers TT.

Yeah, from everything I've read the vast majority of the time it's not a repeatable skill. And this data kind of backs that up; Antigua, Cales(AA) and Russell(Both) were the only guys more than 1 sd away from the mean. And Russell's the only guy that maintained bad numbers over a full season.
