I started a separate thread because this discussion doesn't relate to a specific week's games. I'd like to bring up an issue for discussion. The normal rule for putting a player on the DL is very clear, that the player must be on an actual major league DL (the only exception was for a player that was known to be starting the year on the DL but not officially done yet, so that we could have our rosters legal by the designated deadline). This year we started considering exceptions that met the spirit of the rule but not the letter when Adam was allowed to place Ben Sheets on his DL (and, despite me bringing that up from time to time, I do agree with the rationale for allowing it). There's another common situation that I believe is in the same spirit. When players are injured in September teams frequently don't put the players on the DL simply because the roster spot isn't needed due to expanded rosters. We don't have the luxury of expanded rosters in Roadkill. So a manager can be at a disadvantage because of a player who is clearly injured and unable to play but not put on a major league DL due to expanded rosters. Had I still been in playoff contention I would have been in a bind with Young out for a few weeks but not officially placed on the DL. And Juan could have been in a similar bind with Adam Jones (likely out for the year but not on the DL). I believe that if we are going to make exceptions based on the spirit of the rule that this type of situation warrants equal consideration as an exception. Thoughts?
