It wasn’t his idea, but Astros slugger Lance Berkman understood Thursday when general manager Ed Wade placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a Grade-2 strain in his left calf.

 

"Right now it's a nagging thing that should resolve in the short term," Wade said. "If we were in late September then our approach might be different."

 

Wade made the decision after consulting with Astros physician Dr. David Lintner on Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after Berkman privately confided to teammates that he aggravated the injury further running to first base on his pinch single in the seventh inning Wednesday night.

 

Edwin Maysonet will be called up from Class AAA Round Rock to take Berkman's spot on the roster
