Braves signed catcher David Ross, who had been with the Red Sox, to a two-year, $3 million contract.

This is easily the most the Braves have spent on a backup catcher since Henry Blanco made $2.8 million between 2002 and 2003. Ross is a career .233/.319/.464 hitter against lefties, making him a nice complement to Brian McCann. He could have perhaps received more playing time with Houston or another team, but getting a multiyear deal to play close to home was tough to pass up. His arrival means than Clint Sammons will head back to Triple-A to begin 2009.
