my man-love for geo is well known, but i'm not sure how you can give him credit for the cubs' pitching. the cubs have pitched like one of the best staffs in baseball because they're talented, not because soto knows how to handle a staff. blanco's CERA - a bull crap stat if there ever was one - is roughly the same as soto's.

if you're giving the award based on overall play, berkman and pujols should probably be the two finalists. if you're restricting it to teams contending for the playoffs, in the mix should be hanley ramirez, chase utley, maybe david wright.

He would have to have a HUGE rest of August and September to be legitimately considered.

I take team success into account (whether that's right or wrong), and would therefore put Hanley Ramirez, David Wright, Chase Utley, and Ryan Braun. Maybe Aramis or Soriano can sneak into the discussion with a big final month and a half.

If you don't care about team success (allow players from non-playoff teams to win it) then the race is down to Berkman, Pujols, and Holliday.

I don't think that Geo deserves the MVP award, but I think he's done well enough to not blink if he gets a vote or two.

He should be kept happy by the ROY award anyway.

Earlier this season, Soto struck out eight straight times in Washington, but on the bus to the airport he was joking around when a teammate reminded him of his strikeouts.

"Hey, we won the series, the pitchers were great, and today we had a shutout," Soto shot back. "What's better than that?"

I smell a misquote

I think he's the hands-down winner of the ROY, regardless of what the Braves announcers might say about Jurrgens.

But MVP? Maybe if he got to 25 and 100.
