"It's just mainly from being able to play every day," said the 19-year-old who earned first-team All-America honors his senior year of high school in Cypress, Calif. "I didn't really have that last year, I didn't really have a chance to get in a groove."

Hawks pitcher Marcus Hatley has developed a friendship with Vitters - and a large degree of respect.

"If you watch him you can tell he's really different than other hitters," Hatley said. "He's got really quick hands. I've actually pitched against him a few times and he hit a couple off of the wall against me, so I don't really like pitching to him."

Beyers said Hatley wouldn't be alone as other pitchers have to face him.

"He gives you a great at-bat and he uses the field," Beyers said. "When he first came to us last year he hooked everything to left field. You see his games now, and he's hitting to center, right. That's the whole reason he's got some consistency going now, he's using the whole field."

Article's wrong on Vitters, he's still only 18.

I'd like for Vitters to stay at Boise for a while. He has a lot of work to do with the glove and he is raking right now. Let him continue to gain confidence.

I don't think anyone here is interested in him going up to Peoria and struggling.

He's still 18.

It's not like he's on the fast track.

I think it needs to be pointed out again that the dude is only 18. Over 4 1/2 years younger than Laporta (who's in AA), and 3 1/2 years younger than Wieters (who's in A+). I think Vitters will end up being better than both of them.

Also, how disappointing has Donaldson been after how good he was last year.

An aside, Wieters was recently promoted to AA.
