Last year Wells actually had a passable PECOTA and I thought there was no way he had an MLB future. But with a decent year last year, sticking (a little) after a Rule 5 pick, and a good start in Iowa, can this former catcher also be close to helping the Cubs?

The Cubs gave up too quickly on Wells, who was taken by the Blue Jays in December's Rule 5 draft. While he does not have that one plus-plus offering that makes scouts do a Tex Avery double take, he mixes and matches well enough to be a league-average reliever and has struck out more than a batter an inning in his minor league career. Once again, the Cubs' focus appeared to be on his ERA, which has been inflated by some high BABIP marks, rather than on his more informative and encouraging peripheral stats.

I've always liked Wells, but yeah, he projects as a middle reliever. Probably not good enough stuff to be a dominant late inning guy, but not a guy that's going to just be a garbage time reliever. He's definitely got the ability to help the team out of the pen in the near future. Lot of competition between RHPs though in the Cubs upper minors/majors.
