gammons was on with mike & mike this morning and they asked what is one thing that has stood out or impressed him this spring...his answer.

Kerry Wood

he said wood looks really great and is throwing very well...i'm anxious to see him throw myself as i've always had a huge boner for wood (insert nccubfan joke)

I hope Woody can go b2b days and become the closer... The bullpen would look pretty tough at the end, methinks.

Marmol--when needed to put out a fire

Howry--set-up

Woody--close

---you've always had a huge what for Wood? Wekse, c'mon man-- get a hold of yourself (and I don't mean literally).

Does anyone remember how dominant Wood looked right before he went on the shelf (was it 05 or 06?) and was pitching out of the pen? He was hitting 99-101 on the gun against the Cardinals, who were one of the best hitting teams at the time. Made them look like complete garbage.

That's what I'm hoping for.

i don't even care if he can pitch back to back days. if he's really good then make him the closer most of the time; howry and marmol are both good pitchers and can close when needed.

Against the Braves too right... He hit 99 on a fastball then made, I think Marcus Giles, knees buckle with that ridiculous breaking ball of his.

We've got Wood for Kerry!

Closer by committee! Ride the hot hand! Wood, Marmol, Howry, Eyre!

OK, not Eyre. But ride the hot hand!

Eyre was actually really good after the All-Star break last year and if he is even close to as good as that last year he'll be a valuable arm out of the pen this year.

He had a .81 ERA with an allowed line of .205/.333/.256/.589. His walk rate was still high (14 BB in 22.3 IP) though. It seemed like both Eyre and Howry, based on the fact that both stunk early (Eyre especially) but pitched extremely well down the stretch, that they could have been tired from Dusty running them out there every other day in 2006.

My favorite knee-buckler came against the Pirates. Can't remember the year (might have 03 or 04), but his curve was so sharp the hitter actually buckled until he was almost sitting in the box...and it was a strike.

I'll bet a great curveball fools an ump as much as it does a batter. Nothing annoys me more than a ump screwing up a great curve and calling it a ball on a 2 strike count.

If you think about it, it's just really sad that Kerry Wood has had such an injury ridden career. The guy possessed a practically superhuman talent that was flat out head and shoulders above anybody else, he could have been the greatest pitcher to ever play the game. Even as a rookie in 1998, when 40 home runs wasn't even that great, Kerry Wood could make juiced up Major Leaguers look like they were little leaguers, he could dominate them like it was nobody's business...Kerry Wood is and will always be one of my favorite Cubs, he's a class act and plays the game the right way. Thanks for sticking with us, Mark you should have taken notes. I hope Kerry dominates the league this year...here's his 20k game, Kerry Wood 20K Game He went up against a good team, a lineup with 2 Hall of Famers in it as well, and in just the 5th start of his whole career, matches the record for K's in a game...I know you all know this, but just to remind everyone just how good he was.
