As Back to Banks mentioned, if the Cubs were to find something of value for Dempster, and trade him and would find that situation to be interesting, seeing how Ryan would prefer to be starting, rather than being a closer. I don't know how much service time Dempster has in the Majors-- so I doubt he would have any say in the matter.

His contract ends before he becomes a 5/10.

If Dempster were making $2M next year I'd say just keep him. Since he's getting $5.5M I'd like to see if there's a market for him. That money could certainly be better spent.
