Nice outing for Veal. Still too many walks though.

Yup, at least he spread them out today and didn't get into any major jams (and the big inning) because of them. That's his final line, by the way. He threw 93 pitches. Tenn up 4-2 in the bottom of the 7th.

Daytona wins it 2-0, getting their 2 runs in the 8th inning of Eddie de la Cruz. Joel Santo had his second consecutive strong outing: 8 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 7 K/0 BB.

Peoria is up 2-1 in the 6th. Renshaw: 6 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K/1 BB.

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Drop Sixth in a Row 7-3

Ronny Cedeno and Buck Coats Each Extend Hit Streaks to 10 Games

By Michael Blinn / MLB.com

Robert Andino homered twice and Val Pascucci hit a three-run shot to power Albuquerque to a 7-4 win over visiting Iowa on Monday.

Andino belted a solo shot in the seventh before Pascucci connected three batters later for his 21st homer of the year. Andino added another solo blast, his sixth, in the eighth for his first career multi-homer game.

Reggie Abercrombie went 4-for-4 with a run scored and Scott Seabol singled twice to extend his hitting streak to seven games for the Isotopes (42-43).

Albuquerque starter Daniel Barone (3-0) remained unbeaten in Triple-A after allowing three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts over seven innings. He went 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Carolina.

Geovany Soto went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Cubs (46-38), who have lost five straight.

Iowa starter J.R. Mathes (6-6) surrendered five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and two walks with one strikeout in 6 1/3 frames.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies make it three in a row against M-Braves with 4-3 win

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies took their third game in a row against the visiting Mississippi Braves on Monday night at Smokies Park by the score of 4-3. Donnie Veal (5-5) went for six solid innings tonight, yielding only one run on five hits while striking out six Braves batters. With the win coupled with a loss by Chattanooga, the Smokies pulled into a first place tie in the North Division in front of 3,772 enthralled fans.

Tennessee took the early lead tonight in the first inning, chasing Braves starting pitcher Kelvin Villa (5-6). Sam Fuld continued his torrid hitting of late with a leadoff triple to get things started for the Smokies. Gary Cates followed with a sacrifice fly to score Fuld, and the Smokies were up 1-0. Jake Fox then singled, and moved to second after Casey McGehee walked. Jemel Spearman then doubled down the left field line to score both Fox and McGehee, and suddenly the Smokies had a 3-0 advantage.

The Braves finally got on the board against Veal and the Smokies in the fifth inning. Veal gave up a double to Carl Loadenthal just out of the reach of a diving Spearman in left field to score Van Pope and pull Mississippi to within two runs. The Smokies got the run back in the sixth inning after Tyler Colvin led off the inning with a double, his fourth as a Smokie. With two outs, catcher Chris Robinson crushed a double that hit the wall in deep center field to score Colvin and give the Smokies a 4-1 lead.

That would be all the scoring the Smokies would need tonight, as Tennessee got another strong outing from Veal and the bullpen as well. Matt Avery gave up only one run in an inning of relief. Rocky Roquet came on for the final two innings, striking out three Braves batters, including the final batter of the game to seasl the victory and notch his 2nd save of the season.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Joel Santo Lifts Cubs Past D-Rays, 2-0

Dazzling Pitching Displays by Both Starting Pitchers Ends in Cubs Victory

By: Matt Martinez

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] On an overcast and humid Monday night at the "Jack," Daytona's right-handed sparkplug Joel Santo outlasted Vero Beach southpaw Jake McGee in an old-fashoined pitcher's duel, 2-0.

Santo was awesome. He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning where it was broken up by a single off the bat of Rays' center fielder Jackson Brennan with one out. Santo re-gained his compusure, finishing an outstanding final line where he scattered two singles, struck out seven and walk no one in eight innings of work.

Jake McGee was extravagant himself. McGee went seven scoreless innings where he rendered two singles and no walks while punching out 13 in seven innings of masterful work. McGee walked away with a no-decision for his labor.

All-Star reliever Eddie De La Cruz came in to start the eighth and try and continue McGee's brilliance but the Cubs were hungry for a win.

Jesus Valdez led off with a single and was bunted over to second unselfishly by Yusuf Carter in effort to manufacture a run. Nate Spears stepped into the box against the sidewinder and laced an RBI double into right-center field to give the Cubs the first lead of the game. In a fit of greed, Kyle Reynolds came in to pinch hit for Jake Muyco and promptly doubled in Nate Spears to extend the lead, 2-0.

With a two-run cushion, Tim Layden took the ball looking for his sixth save on the year. Layden didn't disappoint as he sat the D-Rays down in order to secure the win for Daytona.

The win elevated Daytona (4-8) out of the cellar for the first time in the second half. Vero Beach (3-9) subsequently dropped their ninth straight as they look to salvage an already spoiled road trip tomorrow night in the final game of the series at the "Jack."

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Defeat Burlington 4-2

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs took the final game of an eight game homestand 4-2 over the visiting Burlington Bees in front of 5,174 fans at O’Brien Field on Monday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 7-5 and into a first place tie in the Western Division.

The Chiefs got on the board in the first inning off Bees starter Mario Santiago. Jonathon Mota started the game with a single down the left field line. Russ Canzler hit a slow roller that the shortstop did not field cleanly that allowed Mota to score from third to make it 1-0.

Burlington came right back in the second inning to tie the game off Jake Renshaw. Brady Everett doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Matt Morizio came up with a two out hit to score Everett and tie the game at one.

Peoria answered in the bottom of the second inning to reclaim the lead. Brian Leclerc singled with one out and advanced to second base on a passed ball to move into scoring position. Matt Camp followed with a double to left to score Leclerc and give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead.

The Chiefs extended the lead in the sixth inning when Wellington Castillo got things started with a lead off single. Ryne Malone connected on his first triple of the season to the gap in right center field to score Castillo to make it 3-1. The relay throw from the second basemen got away at third and allowed Malone to score to make it 4-1.

The Bees got a run back in the seventh inning after Everett and Joe Dickerson doubled to start inning. Everett scored on the second double to make it 4-2 knocking Renshaw out of the game. Lefty Jayson Ruhlman got the last two outs without allowing any further damage.

Renshaw worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and two runs to pick up his team high eighth win of the season. Ruhlman worked 1 1/3 and did not allow a hit or a run. Alex Maestri got the final out of the eighth inning and worked a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Matt Camp (CF) - Matt went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI in the Chiefs win. He also stole two bases to give him 28 steals in 34 attempts. He also made a run saving diving catch in left center field.

BoiseHawks.com"]Big Inning Helps Sox Beat Hawks

The Everett Aqua Sox used a big inning to crush the Boise Hawks Monday night, 11-3. The Sox sent 12 batters to the plate in a bizarre eighth inning against two Hawks pitchers to score seven times and cement the victory.

The Aqua Sox had a 4-2 lead going into the eighth inning. Julio Castillo, making his first start of the season, gave up single runs in three of the five innings he worked. Joe Dunigan and Matt Mangini had solo home runs for the Sox. Zach Ashwood gave up Mangini's blast in the sixth inning.

The Hawks scored twice in the fifth inning aided by a pair of errors and a run scoring double by Marquez Smith. Hawks' manager Tom Byers was ejected in the inning when he argued that Smith should have been allowed another base when the throw from the outfield sailed out of play.

Chris Siegfried, after striking out the side in the seventh inning, was the victim of just about everything that can go wrong for a pitcher in the eighth inning. Although he walked the lead of batter in the inning, there were double plays not turned, ground balls not handled, catcher's interference, bad hops and a fly ball lost in the twilight that allowed three runs to score. The official line for the inning: 7 runs, five hits, 2 errors, one walk, one hit batter and one more turning point of a game let get away.

Daytona News-Journal"]Joel Santo, Daytona's smooth 6-foot-3 right-hander, denied the visiting Devil Rays almost any chance offensively. He went eight innings, permitting only two baserunners.

Lefty Jake McGee was equal to the challenge for Vero Beach. He went one less inning than Santo, also allowing only two baserunners. He was a little more flashy, as 13 of the 21 outs he recorded were by strikeout. He fanned every Daytona starter -- except Jesus Valdez -- at least once.

Santo (6-4) retired the first 16 batters he faced to hand the Devil Rays their ninth straight defeat. With excellent defense behind him, which eliminated Vero's only baserunner in the first seven innings, he notched seven strikeouts. Neither pitcher walked one batter.

"I really felt comfortable out there," said Santo, who threw 86 pitches. "My sinker and slider were very effective. It was probably my best all-around game this season."

...

De La Cruz relieved the fire-balling McGee after he reached 92 pitches thrown.

"It's a shame we couldn't get McGee any runs," Vero Beach manager Joe Szekely said. "He was just overpowing, with lots of punchouts. His fastball was hitting in the upper 90s (miles per hour). He was outstanding, but our bats were horrendous -- again. McGee deserved better."
